Mary Ashton had the piece “Denial of Perfection” in 10x10x10xTieton, an exhibition featuring works no larger than 10 in x 10 in x 10 in at Mighty Tieton, an incubator for artisan businesses located in central Washington. Saturday, August 11-October 7, 2018.

Dorothy McGuinness receives GAP grant from Artist Trust

Last month, Dorothy McGuinness received a 2018 GAP Award funding from Artist Trust. According to the Artist Trust website, she will use the funding, “to showcase some new and dramatic work at two gallery shows next year, allowing her to continue educating viewers that basketry can be more than the functional craft form that often defines and constrains it.” Says Dorothy, “The GAP award will be instrumental in helping me participate in two gallery shows. I really appreciate the vote of confidence.”

North Sound October 29 Meeting Notes

SDA members in attendance: Sydney, Tesi, Dorothy, Donna, and Diane. Sydney shared fabric that she bought from Marcia Derse Fabrics http://www.marciaderse.com at the Quilt and Fiber Arts Festival. Tesi has a quilt in the companion show at the museum.  Please check out their website for more information.  Tesi shared her sneakers that she decorated for her Wearables Group. She used Posca Acrylic Paint Pens. She also shared her shawl knitted with hand dyed wool. She was also featured on the Create Whimsy website Working in a Series with Fiber Artists as an artist who works in a series. Dorothy has three baskets that appear in the Fiber Arts magazine. She also has a piece in the Craft Forum in Pennsylvania. Donna shared that she does nuno felting. Diane shared wool pieces that had been dyed using silk ties applied to the wool and steamed.

Janice Speck will be showing work in a Wearable Art Trunk Show at Port Townsend School of the Arts’ Art Experience on November 24. Port Townsend School of the Arts will be hosting the show at their Art Experience location during extended gallery hours from 12-7 p.m. Other trunk show artists include Judith Bird, Kate Dwyer, Sara Mall Johani, Teri Nomura and PTSA faculty and students. Last month, we posted a few of her necklaces on our blog.

Mary has pieces in “Surge,” an exhibition designed to draw attention to climate change and its impact on Northwest’s coastal communities” at the Museum of Northwest Art. She has four pieces in the exhibition: two pulp paintings (Crevasse and Between Ice and Snow), a set of four Japanese woodblock prints (Regression 1929, 1960, 2004, 2016), and a free-hanging pulp painted piece (Loss).

Barbara’s new sculpture, Multiples: Keeping Tabs, created out of hundreds of aluminum pull tabs crocheted together using stainless steel wire, is included in the Northwest Designer Craftsmen’s “Contemporary Art of Pacific Northwest Crafts” Exhibit at the WA State Convention Center that we posted about in the SDA-WA Member Activities October blog post.

Barbara also has several new pieces for sale in her Etsy shop. She has been an Etsy member since 2012.
