North Sound Surface Design Group Meeting Notes

Present: Dorothy, Stephanie, Robyn, Sydney, Tesi and Valerie

9-24-2018 – Tesi shared several books: Breakdown Printing by Claire Benn & Leslie Morgan. Also, Improvisational Screen Printing by Jane Dunnewold. Tesi attended another Gold Bar retreat in August put on by Off-Grain Stitchers. They have retreats three times a year in February, May and August. Colleen Wise demonstrated Thermofax methods which require a Thermofax machine, black and white copies and the film. Tesi continues her studies with Gail Harker at various La Conner locations and will show her work at an exhibit in March. One of her quilts in the Sex Abuse series was at the 2018 Quilt and Fiber Arts Festival, October 12-14. She is also working on a collaborative quilt challenge. Five people start out by making a basic quilt and then passing it on to be cut up and changed.

Sydney attended a small, group, four-day retreat in Bellingham in a private home and retreat center called Cedar Ridge. She worked on several projects including cutting out a dress, worked on quilt blocks and finished bags for her granddaughters.

Stephanie attended the same workshop with Sydney and worked on a rayon batik top, a quilt and a pillow. They also visited Two Thimbles Quilt Shop at 1805 Cornwall, Bellingham. Two Thimbles stocks over 4,000 bolts of fabric, with an extensive collection of 1800’s reproduction prints, along with a lively group of batiks, solids and contemporary lines. A collection of Australian fabrics designed by aboriginal artisans provides a unique contrast to the Civil War era prints. Sounds like a very interesting shop. Stephanie also shared information about online surface design workshops being offered by Susan Purney Mark.

Dorothy is busy making baskets to be sold in a gallery in North Carolina. She has a piece in the Northwest Designer Craftsman show through January 4. The Artist’s Opening is Sunday, October 7 at 1:30. She is also one of three finalists to prepare a design project for the Kent-Des Moines Railroad Station. She also has pieces in the Arts Alive Show in La Conner November 9, 10 and 11.

For the month of October, Port Townsend School of the Arts celebrates the uniqueness of the North Olympic Peninsula with a themed installation by Tangled Fibers.

Tangled Fibers is a group of established fiber artists whose members include SDA-WA members Pat Herkal, PTSA faculty Barbara Ramsey, Jean-marie Tarascio and Cathie Wier. The group challenged themselves to create a fiber forest that embodies the spirit of Olympic Peninsula forested terrain. The resulting installation includes beading, embroidery, quilting, weaving and crochet techniques. Additional PTSA faculty art will be on exhibit for the month, complementing the fiber forest theme.

The Flora Fauna Fiber show is a variation of what they installed in the Fiber Habit  window this summer. This exhibit marks the beginning of what could become a fruitful partnership between SDA-NP and PTSA.

The show will be up for the month of October, along with a concurrent display of PTSA faculty art, plus some individual pieces by the four of them. Art Walk Opening was October 6. Many of PTSA artist-teachers were on hand to talk about their work and their classes.

Excellence in Fibers, in Collaboration with Fiber Art Magazine

Fiber Art Now magazine highlighted innovative, contemporary textile art in their Excellence in Fibers issue (Vol 7, issue 2, Winter 2017). Afterward, the pieces went on to show in an exhibition of the same name at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. The exhibit highlights current trends in the categories of vessel forms/ basketry, installation, wall/ floor works, sculptural works, and wearables.

Danielle Bodine’s piece Moonlight Flight, category winner for “Installation Works,” and Liz Axford’s piece Shift 3, category winner for “Wall/Floor Works” in the Fiber Art Now magazine’s Excellence in Fibers will be on exhibit at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles  from now to January 13, 2019. Artist opening reception is Sunday, October 21, 3:00-5:00pm.

SDA-WA Members at PNW Quilt & Fiber Festival

PNW Quilt & Fiber Festival
October 12-14, 2018

Several more SDA-WA members sent in news about PNW Quilt & Fiber Festival October 12-14. Patti Barker, a felt maker from Friday Harbor, had three of her works exhibited in the Festival. Two of them received awards. She received second place in felt for her Stained Glass Shawl and third place in felt for her Dragon Coat (above).

 

Caryl Fallert-Gentry was awarded Best of Machine Quilting for her quilt Lepidopteran #4 (below). It also received 2nd place in the Pictorial Quilts category.

Pat Herkal’s vessel See the USA received 3rd place in the Fiber Art 3D/Sculptural category.

Virginia Franz Turner and Rebecca Wachtman had art juried into the exhibition. Virginia Franz Turner juried into the festival exhibition with two pieces: Fingers to the Bone and The Mother of Us All. She also has another piece in collaboration with Rebecca Wachtman called Schroedingers Cat.

SDA-WA Members in Light Show in Texas

Texas Quilt Museum 2018

Light Show is an exhibit by CQA artists that was originally shown at the National Quilt Museum in Paduka KT in 2017. Staff from the Texas Quilt Museum saw the exhibit and liked it so much they invited CQA to show a smaller version at the Museum. Light Show – Texas will be on display in La Grange, Texas, October 4 to December 23, 2018. An article of the exhibition also appeared in SAQA Art Quilt Quarterly Magazine – Issue No. 12.

Becky Wachtman Classes at The Schack

Intro to Silk Painting
Oct 20, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Level: Beginning. $75 ($65 members).

In this fun workshop, students will learn the basics of painting upon silk using the Serti technique. In the workshop, students will learn the basics of how to select silks for painting. They will learn to draw their design on silk and apply resist to the pattern as well as learning how to paint on the silk using silk dyes. Students will also learn about methods for setting dyes and mounting artwork. Students will take home a finished silk painting, ready to frame, plus they will be given information sheets to help them get started on their own silk painting journey. All class supplies provided but instructor will also have a few silk painting dye sets available for purchase ($20, 4 bottles of dye: magenta, cyan, yellow, black, and a small bottle of dyeset), and will also have PVC frames available for purchase for $10 so you can continue at home! All supplies provided.

Students will need to provide:
1) An apron or wear clothing that can be dirtied by dyes

Students may also want to bring:
1) A pattern or picture to draw from
2) Rubber or disposable gloves

Surface Design: Printing, Stenciling & Image Transfer
Dec 1, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Level: Beginning. $85 ($75 members).

This fun series of surface design workshops is intended to introduce students to a wide variety of techniques allowing them to experiment and explore the world of surface design. Students will leave each class with sample of each technique which they will have created. Plus, they will be given instructions sheets so they can continue to work with the various techniques at home. For all classes, please consider using fabric sourced from thrift shops (ex: sheets, shirts, curtains, etc.). In this workshop, students will be experimenting with a wide variety of surface design techniques including: stamping on fabric with premade stamps, carving simple stamps, eco-printing, mono-printing, using premade stencils, creating stencils, and image transfer.

For this workshop, students will need to provide:
1) At least 8 pieces of light-colored fabric 6″x6″ to 24″x24″ in size (students are welcome to bring a few shirts to print upon)
2) A carving/cutting tool (an X-acto Knife works well for this)
3) Cutting mat
4) An apron or wear clothing that can be dirtied by dyes
5) Rubber or disposable gloves
6) Some plastic baggies to carry home wet fabric

Students may also want to consider bringing:
1) An old/craft iron to help with heat-setting their designs and drying their items. The instructor will have an iron to share but having several in class will make things go faster.
2) A few natural items such as leaves, sticks, or flowers
3) A few other items which they want to experiment with. Suggestions include: a bit of rope, a few rocks, items with an interesting texture
