Fiber Fusion: Weave a Mini Tapestry

Discover the fun and creative possibilities of this popular craft, while we learn the basics and create a miniature tapestry. Ages 18 & up, Beginner.

The Printed Surface: Mark-Making Using Thickened Dye

Using fabric as a canvas and thickened dye as a medium, students will make marks with a variety of tools such as stamps, stencils, and silkscreens. Ages 18 & up, All Levels.

Silk Painting Workshop for Beginners

A fun introduction to fiber art—painting on silk! The students will learn the basics of how to select silks, get them ready to paint, how to paint, how to set their dyes, and how to mount their artwork. Ages 18 & up, Beginner.

Create a personalized random weave basket made out of paper strips. Strips are colored and stamped and then woven into baskets. Ages 6 & up, All Levels.

Random Weave Baskets
Danielle Bodine
Create a unique, personalized basket embellished with natural materials. You will learn to construct a vessel out of flat reed using a random weave basketry technique in this fun, creative workshop. Ages 6 & up, All Levels.

FibeRevolution at the Port Angeles Fine Art Center, September 16–November 15

The SDA North Peninsula group has been accepted for a non-juried show in the fall at the Port Angeles Fine Art Center, September 16–November 15. Opening reception, September 16, 5–7 p.m.

If you are a member of SDA-NP, you are invited to submit new work. All work should not have been shown before on the Peninsula or in our group area (such as Bainbridge Island). The Center can mount work from ceilings, beams, ledges and even outdoors. There will be three Viewer’s Choice cash awards. Work must be for sale. The gallery retains a 40% commission.

There will be an opening reception presentation, and opportunities for lectures and workshops during the exhibition to show fiber art’s breadth and depth. Let’s show what the evolution/revolution of fiber looks like!

Swedish Club Weaving Classes, February 7–24

Beginning Weaving
Series of four classes. Tuesdays, February 7, 14, 21, 28. 2–4 p.m.
No experience necessary. Learn the basics of working on a loom, from yarn to finished cloth. Use the Club’s looms. Blue card members $89; non-members $112.

Basic Tapestry & Two-Harness Weaving

Born in Hungary, Flora Carlile-Kovacs is a felt designer and instructor who teaches felt workshops at the Pacific Northwest Art School on Whidbey Island. She has been selling her work at the Iparos Gallery in Prague since 2005. Her studio is part of the West Seattle Art Walk.

Call for Art for the Schack Art Center!

The final push for Fiber Fusion is upon us! The Prospectus and Entry Form for Schack regional entries is now live here. Current SDA members who reside on Whidbey Island or along the I-5 corridor from Blaine to south of Olympia may submit entries for this show. (This includes members in the North Sound, Whidbey Island, Seattle, and South Sound groups. If you are not sure If you live in that area, please email event.surfacedesignwa@gmail.com.) Up to three wall, free-standing or pedestal pieces can be entered. No width limitations for wall or free-standing pieces; pieces must be 6 feet high or under. The maximum pedestal base is 2 feet. You will have until Thursday, February 2 to enter your pieces. You will be notified by February 16 of acceptance into the show. Pieces are due at the Schack by February 27. The show runs from March 9 through April 15. The opening reception, which has a reputation of being a happening event, will be Thursday, March 9 from 5-8.
