Selected work will appear in print in the winter 2016 issue of the Surface Design Journal (publication date December 23, 2016).www.surfacedesign.org

Call for a volunteer to teach a 2 hour class in Redmond

Hi SDA-WA!  The Fiber Fusion show will soon be traveling to Redmond where it will reside at VALA.  In conjunction with the show moving to VALA/Redmond, we will have several opportunities to participate in related events.  The first opportunity is to teach (or take!) a class at the Redmond Senior Center.    We will post more about the class once it’s finalized.  If you’re interested in teaching a class, please see the call below!

Call for teachers:

We are looking for a SDA member volunteer to teach a free 2 hour community class/ demonstration in conjunction with the Fiber Fusion exhibition in Redmond. The class will be held at the Redmond Sr Center in a classroom with a sink, so wet processes are possible. The Senior Center has reserved Wednesday November 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for this event. This is an excellent opportunity to try out a class idea, generate potential students for a longer paid class you’re offering, or get some teaching experience on your resume.

Deadline for proposals is Wednesday August 24 at 7 pm. Please send a short description of what you will do / offer and a very short description of yourself. If chosen, these will be published in the Redmond Parks & Recreation catalogue. Please send to event.surfacedesignwa@gmail.com

A Follow-up About Barbara De Pirro’s Activities

Hi SDA-WA!  Member Barbara De Pirro has SO much going on, that we thought it would be nice to have a separate post.

Roots & Vines

July – October 2016

Amazon Corporate Office
Harrison St. ( between Boren & Terry )
South Lake Union, Seattle, WA.

“A mysterious unexpected form has taken root, its fibrous tendrils clinging to the surface, reaching outward into the landscape. Inspired by nature’s ability to regenerate, De Pirro developed methods that mimic these plant structures, using an invasive fiber as her medium. She collected hundreds of post consumer plastic bags from the local communities, cut them into strips; and then methodically crocheted individual vines that were woven into this sinuous form.”

Installed along the pedestrian corridor within a majestic Maple tree.

“Imagine standing under a field of strangely beautiful flowers each suspended high above the ground under the leaf canopy of a majestic Maple tree surrounded by the linear architecture of the city. These playful flowers fill the sky with color & light, inviting visitors to look up & interact in a unique experience that combines nature, art & architecture. These eco-flowers have been created using hundreds of reclaimed plastic bottles (& caps) rescued from the waste stream then transformed into art!”

Special thanks to the installation expertise of Art Site Ltd and to Bellevue Arts & Culture for hosting my project!

Member Activities for July 2016

Hi Everyone!  Here is the latest news about our members as well as some opportunities to participate in.

sharon rowleyMember Sharon Rowley is a Featured Artist Speaks on Jane Dunnewold Studio’s website. You can see her video and learn more about her art there.

“Like a Tibetan prayer flag, I create art to send my wishes for peace and happiness into the universe.  Over two decades of exploring Buddhism and traveling to the sacred temples, canyons and mountain-tops of the world, these phrases of loving kindness (may you be happy, live in peace, in safety, in health, and with ease) have resonated strongly.

My art explores both the prayer flag’s form and the spirituality of its messages.  Some of my flags reflect my expansive hopes for all people, others are very personal hopes for myself and those near me.  All are prayers from my heart.”  Sharon

paper transformed

Paper Transformed II is the second exhibition of the work of five SDA WA members and three other Western Washington artists who transform machine and handmade paper into artist books, sculpture, jewelry, baskets and other visual objects. Dona Anderson, Mary Ashton (www.maryashtonstudio.com), Danielle Bodine ( www.daniellebodine.com), Zia Gipson (www.ziagipson.com), Lois James ( www.loisjamespaper.com), Dorothy McGuinness (www.dorothymcguinnessbasket.com), Jean-Marie Tarascio and Sande Wascher-James (presented by Priscilla Juvelis,Inc. (rare and artists books) all use paper for its inherent infinitely malleable character, not just as a substrate for traditional artists’ media. To paraphrase philosopher and communication theorist Marshall McLuhan, Paper Transformed is an exhibition where “the paper is the medium and the message.”

The paper work of Lois James, Zia Gipson and Danielle Bodine carries the record of cultural tradition, personal memory and story-telling. Dona Anderson’s and Mary Ashton’s paper sculpture resonates with the living things which give the work its connection to nature. Jean-Marie Tarascio and Sande Wascher-James artist books celebrate paper’s long history of being used to make books. Dorothy McGuinness’s intricate paper baskets are made from richly colored and patterned paper cut with surgical precision then folded and woven into rhythmic shapes. The eight artists in “Paper Transformed” show us how paper is infinitely alterable, taking the observer from the flat smooth surface we use daily to record the most mundane of life’s events to the richly textured surfaces of handmade three-dimensional objects.
