In celebration of April’s Earth Day,
Port Townsend School of the Arts invited members of the Surface Design Association (SDA) to create an exhibit themed “Green Blue Magic” at the School’s PtSA Downtown location, 236 Taylor. This fiber art installation expresses the visual and tactile experience of the waterways and foliage of our region. PtSA Faculty art will complement the SDA show, reflecting the palettes of earth and sky. The exhibit opens on April 5 and runs throughout the month.
Over 15 artists from PtSA faculty and the local Surface Design Association are participating in the show, presenting a wide array of texturally designed items including quilts and banners, scarves, felted materials, jewelry and up-cycled assemblages. The collection is rich in color, form and texture, providing a unique artists’ view into the Green Blue Magic of our environment.

This show is the Mercer Island Visual Arts League’s annual
‘Treasures in Miniature’ Show, an open show for paintings, jewelry, pottery, photography, fiber arts and much more, a West Coast event. This Treasures in Miniature Show is an annual, open call for artists. This year about 90 art works, no larger than 8×8” in any medium, and sculptures 6x6x6” will grace the gallery, right in the center of Mercer Island. The Opening Night Reception was Friday, April 5. Susanne Foster has four “Recycled Doilies” pieces in the show.

STEM+Art+Design at the
Schack Art Center, SDA members of the Northwest Designer Craftsmen (NWDC) will demonstrate how artists design and create works of art integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) principles. STEM+Art+Design also supports the current emphasis in K-12 Washington state curriculum on STEM: the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math through project-based educational experiences.
For example, imagine a ceramic artist creating work on an electric wheel using precision measuring instruments to ensure the piece is perfectly proportioned; then firing in a highly technical computer driven kiln at temperatures specific to the clay body and glazes used to create the effects designed by the artist. All of these, and many more, technical aspects of the ceramic artist’s work are richly entrenched in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Each NWDC member uses various techniques incorporating one or more STEM principles to create their work. Whether weaving, dyeing, metalsmithing, melting glass or creating mixed media works of art, all of these techniques involve STEM disciplines.
The 78 NWDC members participating in the Schack exhibit are artists from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska, who work professionally in clay, wood, glass, metal, fiber, and/or mixed media.

Basketry Now: 10th Anniversary Exhibition
2019 is going to be remembered for all the amazing exhibits on view during the
National Basketry Organization conference, both at the Kentucky Museum right on the campus of WKU, and in the area including “Basketry Now: 10th Anniversary Exhibit” the biennial juried exhibit with 84 incredible pieces selected.
