Cameron Anne Mason, silk panels from Sky Bound art installation (detail)

Cameron Anne Mason Burning Man Art Installation Banners

A special message from Cameron Anne Mason:

Hello friends—
As many of you know, I have been working on an art installation for this year’s Burning Man Festival called “Sky Bound.” I have been dyeing large-scale silk panels in shades of blue using shibori bound-resist techniques. The panels are striking, and it has been a learning experience for me. You may have seen images on my Facebook or Instagram account.

Two concentric circles of silk banners surround six comfortable benches and a central, kinetic metal sculpture. Dyed in shades from the lightest blue of a summer morning to the inky violet of the horizon at sunset, the banner designs are made using shibori bound-resist methods. Animated by the wind, the banners create an immersive landscape and soundscape.

The project is produced by Dusty Nation, a collective of Seattle-based artists and makers including me, sculptor Ulrich Pakker, builders Peter Weston and Charlee McClellan, and film-maker and lighting guru Dan Thornton. Other amazingly talented crew members are Alan Wenokur, Teri Fox, Pamela Pakker-Kozicki, Gary Mula and Linda Greenway.

Seen from across the Playa, this moving mass of silk will blend with the sky before resolving into its separate elements. Participants may be drawn by the sound of fabrics snapping in a strong wind before it emerges from the dust like a mirage. Designs of circles, squares and triangles overlap and reference ancient geometry. Benches provide respite and a chance to meet and share stories. The mirror-like surface of the sculpture reflects and echoes these patterns and movement.

I have been approached by several people about purchasing silk banners once we have returned from Burning Man. Dusty Nation is self-funding this project as our gift to the citizens of Black Rock City, for an event built on tenets of radical self-expression and gifting. Nevertheless, the costs of producing add up. Offering the banners for sale would provide a way for us to help fund the project.

Please let me know if you have an interest in owning one of these one-of-a-kind artworks imbued with the energy of Burning Man and a little bit of playa dust. We can talk about sizes and price, and a commitment to purchase isn’t necessary right now. We can figure out the details once I return in September.

And if a banner isn’t in your budget, you can still support the project. Any donation is appreciated and all donors will receive a gift in return: One of the beautiful laser-cut medallions designed by Teri Fox which we will be giving as gifts in support of the project.

joomchi

An example of joomchi paper

Joomchi with Zia Gipson on Whidbey Island

Pacific NorthWest Art School
April 28–29, 2018

9 a.m.–4 p.m.
$330This is an introductory to advanced course taught by SDA-WA member Zia Gipson in the ancient Korean technique of joomchi or felted paper. In this context the word ‘felted’ means that this method of fusing papers uses some of the same hand tools and styles of manipulation that one can use in making felt from wool fiber. In both cases, the main tools are the hands and water. Having studied papermaking for several years and traveled extensively in Asia I will also talk about the uses of paper in traditional rural societies in Korea and Japan.

The full two days will include a history of hand paper making using long fiber papers especially mulberry fiber as it is still practiced around the world. We’ll build collages without glue or other usual methods of adhesion, relying instead on the natural process of papermaking. Once we’ve worked our paper by rolling and by hand we can shape the papers into a three-dimensional form or cast the assembled layers into strong, stiff shapes. We’ll explore the options for final texture from a soft, fabric like finished product to a stiff, highly crumpled sheet. Color in your composition will come via the dyes in the long fiber papers you use or in surface design at any stage of the process… as always color and pattern can be an important or subtle element in your composition. What you will do with the finished felted paper is up to you… shape into jewelry or a vessel and prepare for hanging on the wall. Register here.

Troubleshooting in Wet Felt-Making: Advanced Felt-Saving Techniques
September 12, 2018
$170.00
When to use bubble wrap, when to use a rug liner, when to use a drop-cloth or a sheet in felt making? Have you ever felted a piece and you thought it wasn’t successful? Did the silk not stick to the wool? Did you cut the wrong side of the slippers? Are the edges of the felt ruffly and uneven? Did the embellishments separate from the felt? Did the design not turn out the way it was planned? Have you ever started a project but did not really have the time to finish up?In this workshop, Flóra gathered a variety of felt-saving techniques, that are usually the highlights of different workshops. Several tools and techniques will be introduced for troubleshooting accidents of all kinds, that might happen during felt making. Bring your unfinished/unsuccessful piece(s) to the class. We’ll group the items with similarities and discuss all the possibilities to save the piece(s) and give it/them a new life. After the group discussion everyone get’s to work on their own, with more one-on-one counseling. We’ll take photos of the projects at the beginning and at the end of the class. Register here.

Fiber Fusion Workshops at Allied Arts Gallery

Fiber-Fusion-Logo-Web-400x484

I’m sure you are all planning your trip to Richland to view SDA Fiber Fusion 2016 next month. There are so many interesting things to see and visit in the area.  Take some time also to enhance your skills at one of our workshops which are being taught in conjunction with the show!

2016-04-11 18.28.00wtmk

Silk Painting Example 1 – Hibiscus

You could begin with An Introduction to Silk Painting  – a workshop being taught by SDA-WA member, Rebecca Wachtman.  Do you love the idea of painting your a scarf that is uniquely your own, or perhaps you’re thinking bigger – painting fabric for an art project.  An Introduction to Silk Painting workshop is just the thing to get your feet wet with a small project that will teach you the basics!

This workshop will be teaching you about working in the Serti Technique. Serti means “closing”, “Wall”, or Fence”…what it really refers to is using a resist to stop the dye from flowing into undesired areas of your painting.

Silk Painting Example 2 – Crocus

Learn how to select silks, silk dying and painting basics, color mixing and fun texture techniques.  Each student will apply resist to create a floral pattern and then paint their own, hand-dyed/hand-painted, 12″ square of silk art.   The workshop has a great price too!  $50 for Allied Arts Gallery members and $60 for non-members. An Introduction to Silk Painting will be held on June 11th, 2016 from 9am-12pm.  Click here for more information the workshop, or visit to www.galleryatthepark.org

Ice Dyeing Example

Did you know that paint sits on the surface, and that dye chemically bonds with the fabric? The way dyes bond to fabric is the reason why dyed fabrics can be washed and rarely lose color.  Continue your Fiber Fusion education with a workshop on resists and dyeing using modern Shibori techniques with the added bonus of getting to take home your own ice-dyeing packet (which you’ll start in class but get to finish on your own).

Folds-Resist Example

Rebecca will lead you through several different Shibori-resist techniques which you will bring home as set of samples to inspire you, or to use in your next project.  The workshop is titled Resisting Your Dyes with an Ice Kicker, and will be held on June 11th, 2016 from 1pm-4pm.  It’s price is $35 for Allied Arts Gallery members and $45 for non-members. Click here for more information on this workshop, or go visit www.galleryatthepark.org

Allied Arts will also be holding a workshop on wool carding called Creative Carding (taught by Kim Perkins). You will look at different grades of wool and other fibers, experiment with color-mixing as you card to get artbattsthreeexactly the shade you want,  prepare rolags for spinning or make batts for felting.  The Creative Carding workshop will be held on June 4th from 2pm-5pm.  The cost is $50 for members and $60 for non-members.  For more information, click here or visit www.galleryatthepark.org

East vs. West: Exploring Papermaking

MaryAshtonartist-made-paper-e1378169473320Mary Ashton is a papermaker, printmaker, book and fiber artist, not to mention a member of SDA in Washington.  She has explored the various aspects of papermaking, fiber manipulation and textile-related materials. Her paper, books and textiles have been shown in regional and national shows. These pieces incorporate her research into the many facets of fiber fabrication and design. She has studied and taught related papermaking, bookbinding, fiber and specialty technique classes and workshops in England and the United States.  She works with and teaches Western and Japanese style papermaking which differ in fiber, pulp preparation and sheet forming.

Formally trained as a textile conservator  at the Textile Conservation Centre, University of London, Courtauld Institute of Art, she has worked with various museums as well as being a private consultant for insitutions, area museum services and private individuals in  the United States and England.  She has been involved with the art world, non-profit studio work, artist collaborations, outreach with schools and “at risk” youth programs. Her most recent professional position was Master Papermaker and Outreach Coordinator for Pyramid Atlantic Center for Hand Papermaking, Printmaking, Digital Arts and Art of the Book Silver Spring, MD. In this position, she was involved with collaborations with other artists working with a variety of media.

This spring, why not explore making paper with Mary?

Japanese paper is made up of inner bark fibers of traditional plants.  This fiber is soaked, cooked, rinsed and traditionally hand-beaten to form the paper pulp.  The long fibers are layered to form a sheet of paper using a different process than traditional Western made paper.  The result is a fine, translucent long fibered paper with some distinct qualities.  It is strong, good for calligraphy, printing, book arts, three-dimensional work and much more.  All aspects of fiber preparation will be covered in this class.  Three traditional fibers will be used: Abaca, Kozo and Gampi.  Basic equipment needed for future work will be discussed. Bring a towel and secure, non-slip shoes, ideas, questions, enthusiasm, notebook, lunch and beverage of choice.  Students will be working outside during part of the class so please dress according to the weather of the day.

Classes are held at the Seattle studio in the University/Roosevelt area (directions are sent prior to class).  All papermaking classes are limited to 6 students; other classes usually have a limit of 10-12. More information may be found on my website www.maryashtonstudio.com
