SDA-NP Members in the 9th Annual Port Townsend Wearable Art Show

SDA-NP members Pat Herkal, Cheri Kopp, Donna Lark-Weiner and Joyce Wilkerson were juried into the Port Townsend 9th Annual Wearable Art Show May 11.

Pat and Donna collaborated on a nuno felted vest-coat inspired by Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night Over the Rhône. He described the painting as “glittering stars and wavy reflections of the water beneath the sparkling tranquility of the natural lights of the heavens.”

Cheri Kopp’s Orange You a Cutie was entered in the Adult Wearable Art category. Using plastic fruit packaging, berry boxes, scrap paper, foam dish packs and other recycled materials she created a skirt, bustier, hat, shoes and jewelry, creating a fanciful, cheerful ensemble.

Joyce Wilkerson’s fashion dress was designed using her custom woven fabric. A sophisticated dress with faux jacket can be worn for work or any dressy occasion.

5-27 North Sound Surface Design Group Meeting Notes

SDA-WA members in attendance: Sydney Hole, Alana Koehler and Dorothy McGuinness.

NEXT MEETING: Next meeting is Monday, June 24, 2019, at the Skagit Valley Co-op in Mt. Vernon, Room 310. Meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.

Sydney has been busy gathering material and planning projects for Kid’s Fiber Art Camp August 5 to 8. It is open to kids eight to 14 and will cover printing and painting on fabric, hand and machine stitching, indigo dyeing, weaving, book and bag making, self portraits and a museum tour. It will be held at the Garden Club in La Conner. Register online: www.qfamuseum.org or call 360-466-4288.

Alana moved to Anacortes from California. She was taking Gail’s class Studies in Design and Experimental Machine Stitch, Level 2 while still living in California. There will be an Open House at Gail Harker’s Center for Creative Arts, 503 Morris Street, La Conner, June 22, 1 to 4 p.m. for the students taking this class.

Dorothy will have a piece in Art of the Garden at Schack Art Center, June 20 to August 31. Opening reception is Thursday, June 20, 5 to 8 p.m. The biannual exhibit is a summer favorite featuring work to enhance your garden and bring the garden into your home. Pieces by more than 135 regional artists will create a diverse selection of glass, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, photography, and much more. Dorothy will also have her black and white baskets in the Cheongju International Craft Competition 2019 in Korea, September 25 to November 3. She shared several new baskets and a grasshopper.

Gabriela Nirino on Andes Joya

Gabriela Nirino was recently interviewed by the Spanish-language jewelry site Andes Joya. According to the site, “Andes Joya is a platform that brings together jewelers, goldsmiths, silversmiths and institutions such as schools, fairs and galleries, belonging to the 22 countries that are part of the Ibero-American Community of Nations.” Interview here.

Five SDA-WA artists donated glove-inspired artwork to Northwest Designer Craftsmen’s “The Glove Show” that could then be won with a $10 raffle ticket. Previews were held leading up to the event, with the live raffle on January 13 at The Pots Gallery in Fremont. The event was a fundraiser for the Northwest Designer Craftsmen’s Living Treasures Project. Each artwork was also for sale for $200.

Christina Fairley Erickson is offering Surface Design Lab, a surface-design course for students interested in learning methods to embellish, embroider and enrich fabrics. This lab will allow students to try different surface-design methods with expert guidance. Christina will bring her unique experience, lots of samples for inspiration, and demonstrations of various surface design techniques. Students work on projects of their own choice and at their own pace, and are encouraged to experiment with different materials and techniques. 1 college credit awarded per quarter. North Peninsula Chapter to Create Letters for Library

The North Peninsula SDA-WA chapter was commissioned to create an alphabet for the Port Townsend children’s library. “The Surface Design Association had made an alphabet as part of our Art in the Library program that we do with Northwind Arts Center, but that was very much more of an adult-focused art show and it hung in the addition of the library,” said library director Melody Sky Eisler. “We were very sad when the art went down and we thought, ‘wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had a children’s themed alphabet to hang in the children’s library?’” After reaching out to the Surface Design Association to ask if it would be willing to create the art for the library and hearing an emphatic “yes,” the artists set off to work. “Our members were very excited to do it,” said Diana Gipson, who headed the project. North Sound November Meeting Notes

SDA members in attendance: Dorothy McGuinness, Tesi Vaara, Sydney Hole, Donna Lee Dowdney and Marcia Schumaker.

Dorothy has sent a piece to Pennsylvania to the Craft Forum. And, of course, shared another beautiful basket. Tesi shared information about Camano Island Quilter’s new “Art Quilt Group”. She is the chairperson of the group and the next meeting will be January 15, 2019, 10 am to 12pm. Meeting location to be determined. Most likely it will be on Camano or in Stanwood. She shared a knitted vest she is working on and a pretty t-shirt created for her Creative Clothing group. She also shared an interesting piece on cloth using Shiva Paintstiks and Posca Paint Markers. Sydney brought the Fall issue of the SDA magazine to share. She also shared some fun crazy quilt blocks that will eventually be embellished with buttons from her friend’s mom to honor her. Donna shared her nuno felted scarf. She also took a silk paper class where she used silk rovings. She also shared a colorful collaged crab made from cut paper pieces that she created in a Molly LeMaster class. Marcia is new to our group, driving down from Bellingham. Welcome. She took the same nuno felted scarf class that Donna took.

We hope to see you in March when we resume our meetings.

Seattle December Meeting Notes

For their December 12 meeting, eight Seattle group members went to La Conner for two shows, one at The Museum of Northwest Art and one at the Northwest Quilt and Fiber Arts Museum. The quilt museum had a CQA and Brazilian art quilts show that included several SDA members (featured in an earlier blog post), including Barbara O’Steen, Carla Stehr and Tesi Vaara.

At the museum of Northwest Art, they saw an exhibition on both floors about climate change in Skagit Valley called Surge. SDA-WA member Mary Ashton described her project there made of handmade paper (featured in the blog last month). Clarissa Calleson from Bellingham described her work with fiber trees dying from drought and beetle infestation.

North Olympic SDA Chapter Show in Port Hadlock

25 Clallam & Jefferson County Artists Open Surface Design Show at Old Alcohol Plant

Garments, quilts, collages and wall hangings are among the 40 pieces in “Under the Influence of Fiber,” a two-month exhibit opening January 13 at the Old Alcohol Plant in Port Hadlock with a 3-5 p.m. reception.

Organized by the North Olympic chapter of the Surface Design Association, the exhibit includes the work of 25 artists from Port Angeles, Sequim, Port Townsend, Chimacum, Nordland, Port Ludlow and Bainbridge Island. Among the techniques illustrated in the work are several forms of dyeing, embroidery, beading, weaving, felting, transfer of photographic images, papermaking and fabric manipulation.

Several pieces in the exhibit are available for purchase. The show, which closes March 17, can be visited during Old Alcohol Plant hours, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. daily.

Nancy Loorem Adams in Excellence in Fibers IV

Nancy Loorem Adams’s sculpture Daphne was accepted into the Excellence in Fibers IV Exhibition in Print which will be published in the 2019 winter edition of Fiber Art Now. “We received hundreds and hundreds of entries and our three jurors, Carol Sauvion of Craft in America, Perry Price the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and Beth McLaughlin of Fuller Craft Museum were faced with the challenge of choosing the accepted work. Yours was chosen to appear in the magazine.”

In conjunction with the Excellence in Fibers IV print exhibition, Daphne was also accepted into the Craft In America gallery exhibition of the same title in Los Angeles running May 11 through July 6, 2019.

North Sound Surface Design Group Meeting Notes

9-24-2018 – Tesi shared several books: Breakdown Printing by Claire Benn & Leslie Morgan. Also, Improvisational Screen Printing by Jane Dunnewold. Tesi attended another Gold Bar retreat in August put on by Off-Grain Stitchers. They have retreats three times a year in February, May and August. Colleen Wise demonstrated Thermofax methods which require a Thermofax machine, black and white copies and the film. Tesi continues her studies with Gail Harker at various La Conner locations and will show her work at an exhibit in March. One of her quilts in the Sex Abuse series was at the 2018 Quilt and Fiber Arts Festival, October 12-14. She is also working on a collaborative quilt challenge. Five people start out by making a basic quilt and then passing it on to be cut up and changed.

Sydney attended a small, group, four-day retreat in Bellingham in a private home and retreat center called Cedar Ridge. She worked on several projects including cutting out a dress, worked on quilt blocks and finished bags for her granddaughters.

Stephanie attended the same workshop with Sydney and worked on a rayon batik top, a quilt and a pillow. They also visited Two Thimbles Quilt Shop at 1805 Cornwall, Bellingham. Two Thimbles stocks over 4,000 bolts of fabric, with an extensive collection of 1800’s reproduction prints, along with a lively group of batiks, solids and contemporary lines. A collection of Australian fabrics designed by aboriginal artisans provides a unique contrast to the Civil War era prints. Sounds like a very interesting shop. Stephanie also shared information about online surface design workshops being offered by Susan Purney Mark.

Dorothy is busy making baskets to be sold in a gallery in North Carolina. She has a piece in the Northwest Designer Craftsman show through January 4. The Artist’s Opening is Sunday, October 7 at 1:30. She is also one of three finalists to prepare a design project for the Kent-Des Moines Railroad Station. She also has pieces in the Arts Alive Show in La Conner November 9, 10 and 11.

For the month of October, Port Townsend School of the Arts celebrates the uniqueness of the North Olympic Peninsula with a themed installation by Tangled Fibers.

Tangled Fibers is a group of established fiber artists whose members include SDA-WA members Pat Herkal, PTSA faculty Barbara Ramsey, Jean-marie Tarascio and Cathie Wier. The group challenged themselves to create a fiber forest that embodies the spirit of Olympic Peninsula forested terrain. The resulting installation includes beading, embroidery, quilting, weaving and crochet techniques. Additional PTSA faculty art will be on exhibit for the month, complementing the fiber forest theme.

The Flora Fauna Fiber show is a variation of what they installed in the Fiber Habit window this summer. This exhibit marks the beginning of what could become a fruitful partnership between SDA-NP and PTSA.

The show will be up for the month of October, along with a concurrent display of PTSA faculty art, plus some individual pieces by the four of them. Art Walk Opening was October 6. Many of PTSA artist-teachers were on hand to talk about their work and their classes.

Fiber Art Now magazine highlighted innovative, contemporary textile art in their Excellence in Fibers issue (Vol 7, issue 2, Winter 2017). Afterward, the pieces went on to show in an exhibition of the same name at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. The exhibit highlights current trends in the categories of vessel forms/ basketry, installation, wall/ floor works, sculptural works, and wearables.

Several more SDA-WA members sent in news about PNW Quilt & Fiber Festival October 12-14. Patti Barker, a felt maker from Friday Harbor, had three of her works exhibited in the Festival. Two of them received awards. She received second place in felt for her Stained Glass Shawl and third place in felt for her Dragon Coat (above).

Light Show is an exhibit by CQA artists that was originally shown at the National Quilt Museum in Paduka KT in 2017. Staff from the Texas Quilt Museum saw the exhibit and liked it so much they invited CQA to show a smaller version at the Museum. Light Show – Texas will be on display in La Grange, Texas, October 4 to December 23, 2018. An article of the exhibition also appeared in SAQA Art Quilt Quarterly Magazine – Issue No. 12.

In this fun workshop, students will learn the basics of painting upon silk using the Serti technique. In the workshop, students will learn the basics of how to select silks for painting. They will learn to draw their design on silk and apply resist to the pattern as well as learning how to paint on the silk using silk dyes. Students will also learn about methods for setting dyes and mounting artwork. Students will take home a finished silk painting, ready to frame, plus they will be given information sheets to help them get started on their own silk painting journey. All class supplies provided but instructor will also have a few silk painting dye sets available for purchase ($20, 4 bottles of dye: magenta, cyan, yellow, black, and a small bottle of dyeset), and will also have PVC frames available for purchase for $10 so you can continue at home! All supplies provided.

Students will need to provide:
1) An apron or wear clothing that can be dirtied by dyes

Students may also want to bring:
1) A pattern or picture to draw from
2) Rubber or disposable gloves

This fun series of surface design workshops is intended to introduce students to a wide variety of techniques allowing them to experiment and explore the world of surface design. Students will leave each class with sample of each technique which they will have created. Plus, they will be given instructions sheets so they can continue to work with the various techniques at home. For all classes, please consider using fabric sourced from thrift shops (ex: sheets, shirts, curtains, etc.). In this workshop, students will be experimenting with a wide variety of surface design techniques including: stamping on fabric with premade stamps, carving simple stamps, eco-printing, mono-printing, using premade stencils, creating stencils, and image transfer.

For this workshop, students will need to provide:
1) At least 8 pieces of light-colored fabric 6″x6″ to 24″x24″ in size (students are welcome to bring a few shirts to print upon)
2) A carving/cutting tool (an X-acto Knife works well for this)
3) Cutting mat
4) An apron or wear clothing that can be dirtied by dyes
5) Rubber or disposable gloves
6) Some plastic baggies to carry home wet fabric

Students may also want to consider bringing:
1) An old/craft iron to help with heat-setting their designs and drying their items. The instructor will have an iron to share but having several in class will make things go faster.
2) A few natural items such as leaves, sticks, or flowers
3) A few other items which they want to experiment with. Suggestions include: a bit of rope, a few rocks, items with an interesting texture

Meeting Notes for North Sound SDA Meeting

Tesi attended a quilt retreat in Gold Bar. A workshop was given by Anita Luvera Mayer called Mud Pies for Adults. The orange highlights in the quilt above were done with Radiance, a cotton/silk fabric.

Tesi’s Harvest Moon quilt has been accepted into the Voices of CQA show in Portland, September 27-29. More about Contemporary Quilt Art Association here.

Sydney spent 10 days in Paducah, KY. She took a Dina Wakley two-day mini retreat, where she created an amazing art journal using mixed media.

Robyn has been doing more work with eco-dyeing using mordants of alum, cream of tartar and soy milk. I find this process extremely interesting and I’m going to start collecting materials and try my hand at it. Thanks for sharing, Robyn.

Cameron Anne Mason Burning Man Art Installation Banners

A special message from Cameron Anne Mason:

Hello friends—
As many of you know, I have been working on an art installation for this year’s Burning Man Festival called “Sky Bound.” I have been dyeing large-scale silk panels in shades of blue using shibori bound-resist techniques. The panels are striking, and it has been a learning experience for me. You may have seen images on my Facebook or Instagram account.

Two concentric circles of silk banners surround six comfortable benches and a central, kinetic metal sculpture. Dyed in shades from the lightest blue of a summer morning to the inky violet of the horizon at sunset, the banner designs are made using shibori bound-resist methods. Animated by the wind, the banners create an immersive landscape and soundscape.

The project is produced by Dusty Nation, a collective of Seattle-based artists and makers including me, sculptor Ulrich Pakker, builders Peter Weston and Charlee McClellan, and film-maker and lighting guru Dan Thornton. Other amazingly talented crew members are Alan Wenokur, Teri Fox, Pamela Pakker-Kozicki, Gary Mula and Linda Greenway.

Seen from across the Playa, this moving mass of silk will blend with the sky before resolving into its separate elements. Participants may be drawn by the sound of fabrics snapping in a strong wind before it emerges from the dust like a mirage. Designs of circles, squares and triangles overlap and reference ancient geometry. Benches provide respite and a chance to meet and share stories. The mirror-like surface of the sculpture reflects and echoes these patterns and movement.

I have been approached by several people about purchasing silk banners once we have returned from Burning Man. Dusty Nation is self-funding this project as our gift to the citizens of Black Rock City, for an event built on tenets of radical self-expression and gifting. Nevertheless, the costs of producing add up. Offering the banners for sale would provide a way for us to help fund the project.

Please let me know if you have an interest in owning one of these one-of-a-kind artworks imbued with the energy of Burning Man and a little bit of playa dust. We can talk about sizes and price, and a commitment to purchase isn’t necessary right now. We can figure out the details once I return in September.

North Sound SDA Group Meeting, March 26

From North Sound Area Leader Valerie Wootton: On March 26, eight members of the North Sound SDA group met. Tesi is still working on the 300 level art and design with Gail Harker. She also shared several knitting projects she’s been working on. Nancy took a Nuno Felting class from Patti Barker in Friday Harbor. Annette shared her Sue Spargo quilt of the month. She also showed a quilt she made for a wedding present for her daughter.

Stephanie shared a quilt she made with the Fidalgo Island Quilters. She also made two baskets at a Judy Zugish class at the Shack—a willow bark basket and a pine needle basket. Robyn took Gail Harker’s Fabric Painting Class. She also shared Susan Carlson’s book “Serendipity Quilts.” Sidney and Annette took a silversmith class at the Schack, where they made a copper bracelet and a silver ring. Sidney shared “Woolley Ladies” Kits. Valerie took a Nuno Felting Collage Scarf class from Beverly Ash Gilbert at the Kirkland Arts Center.

During the meeting’s Show & Tell:
Barbara Houshmand modeled her fabulously embroidered jeans from Oaxaca. Barbara Ramsey shared her eco-dyed iron cloth. Sue Scott discussed her two pieces juried into the show Strength Struggle Survival—Military Veterans and First Nations peoples share common stories of survival at Olympic College’s Art Gallery in Bremerton. Linda Carlson modeled the completed jacket she created using a modified 1970 Vogue pattern. Pat Herkal passed around a beaded collar.

Donna Lark modeled a felted hat/mask inspired by Franz Marc’s Animals in the Landscape painting for the Port Townsend Wearable Art Show. Her son will model it with a large coat she is making. Her daughter will model a felted wedding dress. Janice Speck brought one of her felted beaded creations with animal themed beads. Donna Lee is elaborately sewing butterflies and plants. She shared a detailed piece with flora, butterflies and a background using 30-40 different green fabrics.

Rachel Gaspers was stitching on an apron made from an old white shirt in preparation for an online India Flint ecodyeing workshop. Caryl Fallert-Gentry received the award for the Best Use of Color at the AQS annual show. Kindy Kemp and Joyce Wilkerson shared a preview of their installation for the May-July Fiber Habit window “Chaos and String Theory, The Process of Creating Fiber Art.” They will both also have finished pieces to include in the window.

Sue Scott is an SDA-WA member and military veteran who has two pieces in a show titled “Strength, Struggle and Survival” at Olympic College Visual Arts and OC Art Gallery https://www.olympic.edu/events-calendar/art-gallery-opening. The show is April 13 to May 18. Two groups of Americans who share stories of survival are exhibiting in this show: military veterans and First Nations working artists from Western Washington.

“Chaos” is the full title of the smaller piece which is a textile collage of mixed materials—cotton, silk, linen, synthetics, heated and painting synthetics and a found metal object. “Maintaining in the Midst of Change” is the full title of the larger piece, which is a collage with an acrylic painted background, altered found images, art papers, found papers and fringe yarn.

The “Courage to Climb” exhibit is inspired by this year’s Port Townsend Library’s “Community Read” book, My Old Man of the Mountain by Leif Whittaker. According to the Northwind website, “The book is a unique coming-of-age tale on the steep slopes of Everest that lights the imagination and fills an emotional human endeavor with universal meaning. Not everyone can climb mountains of rock and ice, but everyone is challenged by doubts and fears. Our artists endeavor to show us what gives us courage to climb with grace and a dash of humility. The Juror Nathan Barnes is a full-time art professor at Grays Harbor College.” The opening reception was March 3 and the artist’s talk with Juror Nathan Barnes was March 4.

Member Helga Winter, a Port Townsend woodturner and artist, curated “Women in Wood,” at Northwind Arts Center April 5 through 30. Her co-curator Betty Scarpino, from Indianapolis, Indiana, is internationally recognized as one of the masters in her field. She states that “artists create glorious objects when they incorporate their life experiences.”

The show profiles the work of fourteen professional women woodworkers from around the country: Sally Ault, Donna Zils Banfield, Dixie Biggs, Martha Collins, Barbara Dill, Cindy Drozda, Katie Hudnall, Kristin LeVier, Tania Radda, Merryll Saylan, Betty Scarpino, Helga Winter, Molly Winton and Andi Wolfe. The displayed work is as diverse as the women’s professional backgrounds—lawyers, educators, nurses, biologists, agriculturalists and industrial arts teachers—yet all became enamored with wood and changed their original careers.

“Women in Wood” opens during Gallery Walk on Saturday, April 7 at 5:30 p.m. The artists will talk about their work on Sunday, April 8 at 1:00 p.m. Five of the artists will be present.The show will move to the American Art Company in Tacoma in May.

SDA members Christina Fairley Erickson, Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry and Cheri Kopp have quilts in the “Photographs and Memories Invitational” show at the Quilt and Fiber Arts Museum in LaConner through March 25, featuring works from 21 artists “who use everything from appliqué, piecing, photo transfer, painting, thread painting, weaving and other techniques. Whether using cast-off clothing, adding text to their work, or interpreting the work of loved ones, each artist strives to create a unique interpretation of a photo or memory.” The following are featured pieces, with artists’ descriptions:

Cheri Kopp, Women’s Work, quilt

A description of the piece “Women’s Work,” from the artist: “At the intersection of Cheri’s art from cast-off materials and her quilting past, this quilt was inspired by her disintegrating ironing-board cover. It honors many traditional roles of women, celebrating housework and handcrafts. Tiny hand-made forms fill out the doll clothes, including the belly of the pedal pushers depicting pregnancy, the only true woman’s work.”

Cheri Kopp, Celebrate Me Home, 2006, quilt

A description of the piece “Celebrate Me Home,” from the artist: “Reflecting on her grandfather-in-law’s death and the idea of his “going home,” Cheri designed four blocks, using signatures on fabric, one for each home in her husband’s family. All of the family’s homes featured in this 2006 quilt are now in the hands of new owners. That’s grandfather Matthew in the window; Cheri’s home flies the Quilter’s Anonymous flag.”

A description of the piece “Centennial #1,” from the artist: “Caryl’s father, Cecil Joseph Bryer, celebrated his 100th birthday on July 24, 2001. The hundred guests, who celebrated with him, included his three children, nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. The photos surrounding trace his life from infancy in 1901 to his 100th birthday. Caryl’s father passed away in January of 2005, at the age of 103½.”

A description of the piece “Watch Master,” from the artist: “For most of his adult life, Caryl’s father worked for the Elgin Watch Company in Elgin Illinois, and ran his own watch repair business on the side. She grew up watching him work with the tens of thousands of sparkling, nearly microscopic watch parts. The cabinet next to his workbench became an end table in her home, the drawers so fascinating, she couldn’t bear to clear them out. Caryl photographed the cabinet, and each of the twelve drawers, then took macro-lens close-ups of the tins and boxes full of tiny parts to make this quilt.”

SDA-WA member Claire B. Jones has a solo exhibition at Betty Feves Memorial Gallery, where she will explore the idea that failure is partly about perception. In this exhibit, Claire displays a statement next to each piece explaining why it failed to meet her original objective. The viewer can then include this in their analysis and see if it alters their opinion of the piece.

Visual artist and SDA-North Peninsula member Cheri Kopp will be teaching a Collage Studies Workshop in Port Townsend March 3.

Drawing on her love of cast-off materials, and incorporating stitching, Cheri will lead participants in exploration of a materials-based art-making process. Using simple resources – scissors, tape and paperboard packaging (cereal boxes, etc.) – and repurposing words and images intended to market products, you’ll find your own messages, creating a series of small collages. Make Your Own Sketchbook

Make your own sketchbook with six different papers for all you marking experiments. This book has a soft cover and will open flat, so you can easily sketch right to the spine.

Classes are held at Mary Ashton’s Seattle studio in the University/Roosevelt area (directions are sent prior to class). All papermaking classes are limited to six students; other classes usually have a limit of eight to 10. Most classes have a materials fee of $25.
