Gabriela Nirino on Andes Joya

Gabriela Nirino was recently interviewed by the Spanish-language jewelry site Andes Joya. According to the site, “Andes Joya is a platform that brings together jewelers, goldsmiths, silversmiths and institutions such as schools, fairs and galleries, belonging to the 22 countries that are part of the Ibero-American Community of Nations.”  Interview here.

“The Glove Show”

The Pots Gallery

Five SDA-WA artists donated glove-inspired artwork to Northwest Designer Craftsmen’s “The Glove Show” that could then be won with a $10 raffle ticket. Previews were held leading up to the event, with the live raffle on January 13 at The Pots Gallery in Fremont. The event was a fundraiser for the Northwest Designer Craftsmen’s Living Treasures Project. Each artwork was also for sale for $200.

Christina Fairley Erickson Class at LWTech

Christina Fairley Erickson is offering Surface Design Lab, a surface-design course for students interested in learning methods to embellish, embroider and enrich fabrics. This lab will allow students to try different surface-design methods with expert guidance. Christina will bring her unique experience, lots of samples for inspiration, and demonstrations of various surface design techniques. Students work on projects of their own choice and at their own pace, and are encouraged to experiment with different materials and techniques. 1 college credit awarded per quarter. “Nature in Fiber” is a juried, SDA exhibition at the new VALA Eastside location that includes works that depict, are inspired by or are derived by nature. The artwork encompasses various techniques, such as artistic quilting, fabric painting, dyeing, felting and more, and was juried by Jacqueline K Calladine, earth artist and placemaker. The reception was January 4.

North Peninsula Chapter to Create Letters for Library

The North Peninsula SDA-WA chapter was commissioned to create an alphabet for the Port Townsend children’s library. “The Surface Design Association had made an alphabet as part of our Art in the Library program that we do with Northwind Arts Center, but that was very much more of an adult-focused art show and it hung in the addition of the library,” said library director Melody Sky Eisler. “We were very sad when the art went down and we thought, ‘wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had a children’s themed alphabet to hang in the children’s library?’” After reaching out to the Surface Design Association to ask if it would be willing to create the art for the library and hearing an emphatic “yes,” the artists set off to work. “Our members were very excited to do it,” said Diana Gipson, who headed the project.
