DOROTHY McGUINNESS NEW BOOK

Dorothy McGuinness has written a book on diagonal twill basketry in paper. The title is: The Art of Contemporary Woven Paper Basketry, Explorations in Diagonal Twill. It will be available in September 2021 from Schiffer books or through Amazon.

Using hundreds of strips of paper at a time, strips that are cut 3 millimeters wide with a pasta cutter from watercolor paper painted with acrylics, McGuinness weaves in original ways that build unique and intriguing forms. Her creations, whether baskets or sculptural art, exude energy and elegance. Here she shares for the first time, in fascinating photos and practical text, how to weave several basket shapes in diagonal twill, including instructions in undulating twill. Explore new structural forms: weaving multiple woven units together, asymmetrical corners, and multiple-stepped corners in tandem that add structure to the work. McGuinness demonstrates how to create several rim treatment finishes for the baskets. Next, learn some different ways to incorporate a sculptural element into your work. You’ll also explore how various color patterns in the base will weave up on the sides of the basket. Throughout, she encourages you to search your own interests for ideas to incorporate.

Pat Herkal at Collective Visions Gallery

“Seahorse” by Par Herkal

Pat Herkal’s 3D soft sculpture, Seahorse, was juried into the 2021 CVG Show, an annual Washington state competition. The fully beaded 10″x3″ piece hangs from monofilament and a swivel that allows it to gently turn. It is completely hand sewn. The show closes February 26.

The Bremerton gallery is open Wednesday – Saturday, 11am – 4pm. 135 Washington artists are represented.

SDA-WA Seattle members´ news

Seattle group members had a zoom meeting during the members made a presentation, showing their sources of inspiration. Here is a small sample of this initiative, in which images of works by different artists, photographs, texts and music were shared.

Glenda Guinn Gilles at Violet Protest

VIOLET PROTEST SQUARE OF THE WEEK – made by Glenda Guinn Gilles from Kirkland, WA – Besides the exquisite embroidery detail, this square reflects the desire for unity after these turbulent times – red and blue mixing together to form a unified core. Each of us occupies our separate life with its concerns, hopes, and challenges. But if we can find a way to face our challenges together, our nation can blend all its beautiful diversity, nurture the treasures we possess and build a nation that truly reflects the America we’ve all heard about and believe can be possible. https://www.facebook.com/thevioletprotest/

About the Violet Protest “Whether we weave, knit, crochet, quilt, or embroider all 26,750 of these squares — through this social action, and from every corner of America; we as makers of all political persuasions, believe we can employ our willing spirit and our talents to contribute to healing divisions that threaten our country. This collection of textile squares will be first displayed at Phoenix Art Museum, in the Spring of 2021, before they are sent to the new 117th Congress by late 2021.

Focused on the values we hold dear as Americans, rather than any political beliefs, the color violet symbolizes the literal combination of red and blue, long held as symbols of our nation’s differing ideologies. Our common goal is to send a physical message of friendly protest through this colossal visual expression to demonstrate that if we as citizens are willing to come together, so then must our elected officials”

Online Printmaking & Collage

We will explore techniques using your own printed imagery to create inspirational Collage artworks! Learn the basics of creating monotype, collagraph, thermofax and relief printed images. All of this can be done without a press, using water based, slow drying GOLDEN acrylic paints. These methods create unique results; the pressure of printing creates texture and pattern not possible when painting directly on paper. Several examples & demonstrations will show how these prints can then be used in Collage & which products work best for gluing various weights of paper. Gain a broad understanding of product, material, method, tips & tricks.

Debra Olson new work

Debra is going to participate in an exhibition at the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum (more information coming soon!)

” I carve foam and then cover with papier mache’ to create the form of the bird. I then add paint, paper, fabric more paint, beads and found objects. An acrylic finish is then applied. Naming them comes directly from their emerging personalities:  “Spotted Towhee” (may be directionally challenged as he carries a map on the top of his hat as well as on his breast!) and “King Quail” “.

Information on these artists and their pieces is posted in the display window and on the SDA chapter’s website, https://sda-np.com/. In normal times, chapter members meet regularly, with meetings rotated between Port Townsend, Sequim and Port Angeles. Meetings are open to the public at no charge.

SDA-WA Seattle members´ news

Six members of the Seattle group participated in an exchange challenge. Each person in the group sent an envelope to one other person in the group with materials to be used to create a piece. Here are the results:

CARLA STEHR

“One photo shows the challenge materials I was given (the left-overs), including orange and black and white cotton fabric, metallic sliver and white fabric, grey felt, white embossed vinyl backed with flannel and a plastic shipping envelope. Definitely not colors or materials I tend to use in my art. But the shiny plastic envelope reminded me of the inside of shells, and I had recently been experimenting to see if I could get fabric to look like oyster shells.

For the inside shell surface, I stitched the plastic shipping envelope onto a base of white Ecofelt, added gray felt and black cotton fabric (at the top) to make the hinge, and painted the orange fabric purple for the muscle scar that all oyster shells have. For the outside, I stitched the white vinyl fabric and small pieces of orange, black and white and sliver-white fabrics onto a base of white cotton fabric and Ecofelt. I put wireform mesh in the middle and stitched the two sides together. It was an experiment to see if the wireform mesh would allow me to bend it into a three-dimensional shape, and it worked! ”

“Undersea Garden” by Tangle Fibers group

Tangle Fibers group at the Port Angeles Fine Art Center

“Undersea Garden” comprises a collaborative installation and exhibition by Port Townsend SDA-NP artists Pat Herkal, Barbara Ramsey, Jean Marie Tarascio and Cathie Wier – collectively known as Tangled Fibers.  Their art is a celebration of the patterns, colors and textures of sea life. Using fiber, paper, beads, color, texture, wire, yarn and whimsy, the Esther Webster Gallery has been transformed into an undersea garden of kelp, tide pools, octopus, sea stars, nudibranchs, jellyfish and other delightful creatures of the sea. Some are painstakingly true to life, others created from their ocean fevered imaginations. Some pieces in this exhibit are the work of the individual member of the Tangled Fibers group, others are collaborative efforts. Exhibiting works are for sale in person and online.PAFAC is open Thursday-Sunday 11-5 or visit www.pafac.org for a virtual tour and the gift shop offerings, until November 15.

Healthy Nature by Cheri Kopp

“Healthy Nature” by Cheri Kopp

Cheri Kopp Classes at Port Townsend School of the Arts

SDA-NP (North Peninsula) member Cheri Kopp recently joined the faculty of the Port Townsend School of the Arts. Drawing on her love of cast-off materials, and incorporating stitching and fiber techniques, her classes explore a materials-based art-making process.

Registration is now open for her initial classes using paperboard product packaging (cereal and cracker boxes, ice cream cartons, etc.) to create small collages with stitched embellishments.

Make It & Take It: Quick Collage – Friday September 15, 6 – 9 p.m.
Working quickly and messily, while enjoying food, drink and music, participants will create small collages, suitable as greeting cards, gifts or display. Bring your friends and enjoy a fun evening of creativity. Info and registration HERE.

Collage Studies – Saturday & Sunday November 18 & 19, 9 a.m. – noon
Repurposing words and imagery from paperboard packaging, students will complete a series of collage exercises in this two-day workshop. Appropriating words meant for sales and marketing, images only loosely product-related, you’ll explore depth, illustration, composition and message. Info and registration HERE.

Classes are held in Building 306 on the Fort Worden campus in Port Townsend, Washington. All materials and supplies are provided.

Artistry in Fiber, Vol 2: Sculpture by Anne Lee and E. Ashley Rooney

SDA members Lanny Bergner, Barbara DePirro, Cameron Anne Mason, Dorothy McGuinness and Carol Milne are among the artists published in Artistry in Fiber, Vol 2: Sculpture, available July 2017.

Nearly 500 photos of artwork with personal insights from 76 of today’s most noteworthy artists show the tremendously broad range of possibilities that working in three dimensions can offer. In conjunction with the other two books in this acclaimed series, it invites readers to re-examine fiber art through a multifaceted contemporary lens. Both established artists and emerging artists whose work is attracting notice are gathered here. Carol Milne’s knitted glass and Peter Gentenaar’s technique of vacuum forming and air-drying paper fibers are but a few examples of artists using new materials with traditional methods.

Using Western-European papermaking techniques, students will explore variations on traditional vat sheet forming. Discussions will include various equipment, ways of making pulp, recycling, inclusions, layering, making large sheets from small frame and intro to three dimensional techniques. May 27, 28 – 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. $175

Introduction to Japanese Papermaking
Japanese paper is made up of inner bark fibers of traditional plants.  The long fibers are layered to form a sheet of paper using a different process than traditional Western made paper.  The result is a fine, translucent long fibered paper with some distinct qualities.  All aspects of fiber preparation will be covered in this class.  Three traditional fibers will be used: Abaca, Kozo and Gampi.  Basic equipment needed for future work will be discussed. June 10, 11 – 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. $175

Pulp Painting and Big Paper
Pulp painting is a form of painting paper on paper.  Paper pulp, usually cotton, is overbeaten to make a fine slurry which is then pigmented to form a personal palette.   These specially pigmented pulps are applied to a freshly pulled sheet of paper using a variety of techniques to execute the desired effect or image. Students will work on samples of the various techniques and will then work on a larger wet sheet of their own design. July 15, 16 – 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. $175

All papermaking classes are limited to 6 students. Classes are held at Mary Ashton Studio in the University/Roosevelt area. Unmade Bed: The Exhibit by Debra Calkins

This book is a catalog of the art and viewer responses of the “Unmade Bed” Exhibit, curated by SDA member Debra Calkins.

Prostitution is said to be the oldest profession in the world. The reality is that prostitution is the oldest ongoing abuse. There are many organizations that provide statistical information, such as 80% of the people trafficked in the United States are US citizens; half of them are children; 85% of those children come out of foster care. As a culture, we are in denial, thinking not in our neighborhood, not on our corner.

“Unmade Bed” is an exhibit of visual art that tackled the heart response to the sex slave trade. We, all of us, hold in our hands and hearts the ability to stop this inhumane practice. We can overcome the denial, stop the blaming, take action, provide for the victims and change the world. Available here: https://www.amazon.com/Unmade-Bed-Exhibit-Debra-Calkins/dp/1540542556

Sea Unseen by Carla Stehr

SDA member Carla Stehr’s fiber art is often inspired by microscopic images that she photographed with a Scanning Electron Microscope as part of her scientific work as a Fisheries Biologist. Just after she retired, she published a collection of the most artful images taken during 30 years of scientific research. The book was written so that people of all interests could see the microscopic beauty of marine organisms. The book Sea Unseen: Scanning Electron microscopy images from Puget Sound and Beyond, was printed through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric and Administration by the US Government Printing Office. Below are examples of a few microscopic images and the fiber art inspired by the images.
