If you haven’t seen it yet, you are in for a treat—a great number of beautiful, intriguing, witty and questioning works in fiber! In neutral to vibrant colors! In all sizes! 2- and  3-D!

As part of the exhibition, you are invited to an artists’ talk and presentation on Sunday, February 12 from 1 to 2 p.m.

Cloth, Shadow, Line by Joyce Wilkerson

Joyce Wilkerson will tell us about her work “Cloth, Shadow, Line,” which pairs a textile fragment with a photograph. Joyce is primarily a weaver, and is also interested in printmaking and photography. In her work, she explores the greater whole created by the dialogue between the media.

SDA Washington’s Working Group, a five-month support group that uses Artists U materials “to build sustainable lives,” has reached the halfway point. Through the working group, artists develop their own strategic plan and learn useful information in reaching their goals. There are four members in the group: SDA artists Arisa Brown, Faith Hagenhofer, Francesca Penchant and Rebecca Wachtman.

Artists U supplies its working groups with the book Making Your Life As an Artist, a workbook, videos, and a curriculum. So far, feedback about the working group has been positive. Francesca says that she likes that “the curriculum and materials are all set up for you and totally free, so it’s easy to do your own group.” Faith says, “I was actually really impressed by some of the simple messages from the book and the reinforcing videos.” She likes getting “the affirmation for project management skills that being an artist has developed in me,” and how Artists U “really parses the steps I need to take to reach toward any goals I may have.” According to Rebecca, “I strongly suggest joining a group if you have the chance!” If you are interested in starting an Artists U group, see http://www.artistsu.org/working.

Unmade Bed – Opening October 7th, 2016

201610calkinsUnmade Bed An Exhibit on the Sex Slave Trade, curated by Debra Calkins, Whidbey Island Surface Design and SDA member.

Prostitution is said to be the oldest profession in the world. The reality is that prostitution is the oldest ongoing abuse. Participating artists from western Washington invite the public to come respond to this powerful topic and exhibit.

The art ranges from photography to encaustic to video to fiber by artists: Debra Calkins, Christina Fairley-Erickson, Jan Fisher, Julie Gautier-Downs, Mary Hilkey, Barbara Matthews, Marie Plakos, Diane Reardon, and Cheryl Weisz. This exhibit will be at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, located at 565 Camano Ave, Langley, WA. The exhibit opening will be on October 7, 4:00pm – 7:30pm. The exhibit will extend to October 8 , 1:00pm – 7:30pm; and October 9, 12:30pm – 2:00pm.

Call for a volunteer to teach a 2 hour class in Redmond

Hi SDA-WA!  The Fiber Fusion show will soon be traveling to Redmond where it will reside at VALA.  In conjunction with the show moving to VALA/Redmond, we will have several opportunities to participate in related events.  The first opportunity is to teach (or take!) a class at the Redmond Senior Center.    We will post more about the class once it’s finalized.  If you’re interested in teaching a class, please see the call below!

Call for teachers:

We are looking for a SDA member volunteer to teach a free 2 hour community class/ demonstration in conjunction with the Fiber Fusion exhibition in Redmond. The class will be held at the Redmond Sr Center in a classroom with a sink, so wet processes are possible. The Senior Center has reserved Wednesday November 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for this event. This is an excellent opportunity to try out a class idea, generate potential students for a longer paid class you’re offering, or get some teaching experience on your resume.

Deadline for proposals is Wednesday August 24 at 7 pm. Please send a short description of what you will do / offer and a very short description of yourself. If chosen, these will be published in the Redmond Parks & Recreation catalogue. Please send to event.surfacedesignwa@gmail.com
