New Meeting!

SDA Artists’ Working Group

Building on the success of SDA-WA’s first Artists U* Working Group, we are hosting a second meeting series, open to all members! The purpose is to build sustainable lives as artists by clarifying and accomplishing goals. This is a five-month subgroup of the Seattle SDA group, and will not substitute for the regular Seattle SDA meetings.

A working group is four to 15 artists who do Artists U assignments, and then meet to discuss. Members make four key documents: a plan, a mission statement, a personal budget and a calendar. For this series, the SDA Working Group will meet for two hours on the third Saturday of the month for five months, starting September 16. Meetings are free.

Kaylin Francis Wins 2017 Outstanding Student Award

The Surface Design Association has awarded the 2017 Outstanding Student Award to Kaylin Francis, Seattle SDA member. Kaylin is a recent graduate with a bachelor’s of fine arts degree in Craft from the Fibers Department at Oregon College of Arts and Crafts. Her work is highlighted on the SDA website here.

The purpose of the award is to increase awareness of the Surface Design Association by rewarding the innovative work of students and by providing exposure to a high level professional association in their chosen field. The Outstanding Student Award is presented each year to a student enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program at a college or university.

“Level 4 Studies in Experimental Stitch & Multimedia Diploma” Exhibition

SDA member Marie Plakos will be among the artists in this celebration of the accomplishments of Level 4 Experimental Stitch & Multi-media graduates, who have just completed two and a half years of study with Gail Harker. It is free and open to the public.

While on this course, students use original design work and experimental stitch techniques to create innovative and imaginative new art pieces using a wide variety of techniques. Work on display will include wall hangings, 3-D items and a portfolio of samples.

The five graduates include Dianne Corso of Anacortes, WA, Isabel Parker of Port Alberni, BC, Canada, Marie Plakos of Langley, WA, Susan Sasnett of Seattle, WA and Terri Shinn of Snohomish, WA.

SDA member Rebecca Wachtman will be teaching a variety of shibori/tie-dyeing techniques in “Resisting Your Dyes” at the Schack Art Center in Everett, August 12.It is a chance to learn and play with a variety of resist and dyeing techniques that are shibori and tie-dye inspired. Students will have the opportunity to play with natural-fiber fabrics and learn a variety of fun techniques for applying dyes and using physical resists.

Students will learn:A variety of shibori/tie-dying techniques. A few of the techniques include: twisting and tying up fabric using string resists, use various clamps as resists, placing beans/marbles/rocks or other materials into fabric and tying fabric around them to create resists. If time, they can practice sewn-in resists using needles and thread. They will be making Shibori and tie-dye samples to take home. If they wish, they can dye a shirt or two as well! Ages 18+

Presented by the National Basketry Organization, “All Things Considered 9: Basketry in the 21st Century” is the ninth in a series of juried biennial exhibitions intended to show the full spectrum of work currently being executed by well-known and emerging artists in the United States. Lanny Bergner, Danielle Bodine, Barbara De Pirro, Kathey Ervin, Nancy Loorem Adams, Dorothy McGuinness and Carol Milne are among the SDA members with work in the show.

The exhibition opens in conjunction with the 2017 National Basketry Organization’s conference in Tacoma, Washington. From black bamboo to reclaimed plastics, it represents a broad range of approaches by artists working within the field of contemporary basketry. Showcasing excellence in creative exploration, technique, craftsmanship, these 70 artworks were juried by Lloyd Herman, the founding Director of the Smithsonian Institution’s Renwick Gallery from 1971 to 1986. Herman is also the author of Art That Works: The Decorative Arts of the Eighties, Crafted in America. He lives and works in Seattle, Washington. SDA Members in Fiber Optix’s “Against the Wall” Quilt Show

Textile wall hangings by members of the Fiber Optix art group are in “Against the Wall” at Penn Cove Pottery.

Fiber Optix is a group of nationally and internationally recognized Pacific Northwest artists who make abstract art quilts. The work is built upon the foundation of traditional, utilitarian quilt making, but these contemporary artists use the tools of that tradition in order to achieve the same goals as all artists: self expression and the creation of meaningful works of art. The striking, colorful pieces in “Against the Wall” vary in size, but all are meant to be hung on the wall.

Local Whidbey Island artists included in the exhibit: SDA member Liz Axford, plus Marcia Derse and Janet Steadman. SDA members in Fiber Optix who have work in the show are Louise Harris, Janet Kurjan, Melisse Laing and Barb Nepom. Other Fiber Optix members in the show are Sandy Altenberg, Cher Cartwright, Nancy Cordry and Ellin Larimer.

“Interwoven: Art Meets Nature” at Highfield Hall & Gardens

SDA-WA members Lanny Bergner, Danielle Bodine and Dorothy McGuinness are exhibiting artwork in “Interwoven: Art Meets Nature,” a contemporary fiber exhibition at Massachusetts’s Highfield Hall & Gardens, curated by Marcia Young, publisher of Fiber Art Now. This show of virtuoso works by national artists includes nearly every form of fiber art, including weaving, felting, tapestry, needlework, basketry, handmade paper, silk painting and book arts. The exhibition will be on display from June 25 to September 6. Artist Reception: June 25, 1 – 3 p.m.

“Healthy Nature” by Cheri Kopp

Cheri Kopp Classes at Port Townsend School of the Arts

SDA-NP (North Peninsula) member Cheri Kopp recently joined the faculty of the Port Townsend School of the Arts. Drawing on her love of cast-off materials, and incorporating stitching and fiber techniques, her classes explore a materials-based art-making process.

Registration is now open for her initial classes using paperboard product packaging (cereal and cracker boxes, ice cream cartons, etc.) to create small collages with stitched embellishments.

Make It & Take It: Quick Collage – Friday September 15, 6 – 9 p.m.
Working quickly and messily, while enjoying food, drink and music, participants will create small collages, suitable as greeting cards, gifts or display. Bring your friends and enjoy a fun evening of creativity. Info and registration HERE.

Collage Studies – Saturday & Sunday November 18 & 19, 9 a.m. – noon
Repurposing words and imagery from paperboard packaging, students will complete a series of collage exercises in this two-day workshop. Artistry in Fiber, Vol 2: Sculpture by Anne Lee and E. Ashley Rooney

SDA members Lanny Bergner, Barbara DePirro, Cameron Anne Mason, Dorothy McGuinness and Carol Milne are among the artists published in Artistry in Fiber, Vol 2: Sculpture, available July 2017.

Nearly 500 photos of artwork with personal insights from 76 of today’s most noteworthy artists show the tremendously broad range of possibilities that working in three dimensions can offer. In conjunction with the other two books in this acclaimed series, it invites readers to re-examine fiber art through a multifaceted contemporary lens. Both established artists and emerging artists whose work is attracting notice are gathered here. Carol Milne’s knitted glass and Peter Gentenaar’s technique of vacuum forming and air-drying paper fibers are but a few examples of artists using new materials with traditional methods.

NEW! Mary Ashton Studio Summer Papermaking Classes

Introduction to Western Papermaking
Using Western-European papermaking techniques, students will explore variations on traditional vat sheet forming. Discussions will include various equipment, ways of making pulp, recycling, inclusions, layering, making large sheets from small frame and intro to three dimensional techniques. May 27, 28 – 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. $175

Introduction to Japanese Papermaking
Japanese paper is made up of inner bark fibers of traditional plants. The long fibers are layered to form a sheet of paper using a different process than traditional Western made paper. The result is a fine, translucent long fibered paper with some distinct qualities. All aspects of fiber preparation will be covered in this class. Three traditional fibers will be used: Abaca, Kozo and Gampi. Basic equipment needed for future work will be discussed. June 10, 11 – 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. $175

Pulp Painting and Big Paper
Pulp painting is a form of painting paper on paper. Paper pulp, usually cotton, is overbeaten to make a fine slurry which is then pigmented to form a personal palette. These specially pigmented pulps are applied to a freshly pulled sheet of paper using a variety of techniques to execute the desired effect or image. Students will work on samples of the various techniques and will then work on a larger wet sheet of their own design. July 15, 16 – 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. $175

All papermaking classes are limited to 6 students. Classes are held at Mary Ashton Studio in the University/Roosevelt area. All classes have a materials fee of $25. Dorothy McGuinness at FibreWorks Studio & Gallery

SDA-Washington member Dorothy McGuinness will exhibit work in the group show “Beyond The Basics: Jackie Abrams & Friends,” the next exhibition at FibreWorks Studio & Gallery in Madeira Park, British Columbia June 17 to July 23. It is a juried show of basketry inspired by the teachings of renowned Vermont basketry artist Jackie Abrams. In addition to the accepted submissions, the exhibition will also feature some of Abrams’s work.

The opening reception is Saturday, June 17 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. A Surface Design Association Award of Excellence will be announced at the reception.

De Pirro’s “Flora” bouquets at Off the Walls Gallery

The re-invented ”Flora” bouquets are now installed at Off the Walls Gallery in Shelton, 703 W Railroad Ave, Shelton, Washington. Reclaimed plastic bags crocheted into botanical forms. She will be sharing other installation project reinventions at the ”Meet the Artist” event, May 31, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Show and tell, conversation and snacks.

De Pirro’s ”Metamorphosis” at the Washington Department of Ecology
The installation of “Metamorphosis” is now installed at the Washington Department of Ecology in Lacy, Washington. This project spans three floors, illuminated by an ever-changing glow of natural light. Meet-the-artist reception is June 2 for show and tell, conversation and snacks. ”Metamorphosis” is a series of opulent chrysalis forms representing a transformation from the humble and forgotten into the exceptional. As nature creates life cell by cell, so De Pirro has created these sculptures. She reclaimed and hand cut hundreds of plastic bottles into individual cellular shapes, then stitched them together into a multifaceted organic structure.

SDA member Danielle Bodine will show her work at the International Fiber Art Fair at the Hangaram Art Museum, Seoul Art Center in South Korea from June 12 to 19. Bodine is one of the 15 national and international fibers and textile artists selected by Program Director MI-Kyoung Lee, Craft + Material Studies Coordinator, Fibers/Textile at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia to exhibit her art work and participate in this international show.

“Gathering: Six Northwest Basketry Artists” at Spaceworks Gallery

“Gathering: Six Northwest Basketry Artists” is an exhibition of six basketry artists who are members of the National Basketry Organization and they represent the diversity of traditional and non-traditional approaches to the making of Pacific Northwest basketry. The works are created out of a diverse range of materials using a variety of basketry techniques. The participating artists are Lanny Bergner, Jill Nordfors Clark, Katherine Lewis, Dona Anderson, Danielle Bodine, and Peeta Tinay. The window display is at Spaceworks Gallery on the corner of 11th and Broadway in Tacoma, WA. Fiber Fusion Group Show

The last leg of SDA-WA’s “Fiber Fusion” tour runs from March 9–April 15 at Schack Art Center in Everett. The Center has both free and paid “Discovery Tours:”

Self-Guided Tour—Free (Available daily during open hours.)

This free tour begins with an exhibit questionnaire that will guide you through the current exhibit as you hunt for the answers, learn about the artwork and artists. Feel free to look into the studios to possibly see artists painting, drawing, printmaking, metalsmithing, at work in the Flame & Kiln Studio or blowing glass in the Hot Shop.

Docent Guided Tour—$30 per group

(Available Wed.-Sun. open hours during scheduled exhibits, beginning the Wednesday after exhibit opens. Check exhibit schedule for dates. Subject to docent availability.)

This guided tour is filled with fun and facts about the history of the Schack, the artwork in the current exhibit and behind-the-scenes peeks at the Hot Shop, classrooms, mezzanine gallery and studios, and other wonderful parts of the space.

Rebecca Wachtman in “Flowers, Fungi, & Flight” Show

SDA member Rebecca Wachtman’s exhibition “Flowers, Fungi, & Flight” will be at the Pacific Rim Galleria at Bellewood, 3710 Providence Point Drive SE, Issaquah from April 8–28. It will include a variety of silk paintings, as well as a selection of silk and resin sculptures.

Rebecca will be demonstrating silk painting on April 8 from 1 p.m.–2 p.m., and then the opening reception will follow immediately after the demonstration, from 2 p.m.-4 p.m.

Bellewood’s Pacific Rim Galleria is open to the public for the opening reception. If you can’t make the opening reception and want to see the exhibit, Bellewood welcomes visitors and asks that you call to schedule a viewing, 425-391-2880.

Unmade Bed: The Exhibit by Debra Calkins

This book is a catalog of the art and viewer responses of the “Unmade Bed” Exhibit, curated by SDA member Debra Calkins.

Prostitution is said to be the oldest profession in the world. The reality is that prostitution is the oldest ongoing abuse. There are many organizations that provide statistical information, such as 80% of the people trafficked in the United States are US citizens; half of them are children; 85% of those children come out of foster care. As a culture, we are in denial, thinking not in our neighborhood, not on our corner.

“Unmade Bed” is an exhibit of visual art that tackled the heart response to the sex slave trade. We, all of us, hold in our hands and hearts the ability to stop this inhumane practice. Sea Unseen by Carla Stehr

SDA member Carla Stehr’s fiber art is often inspired by microscopic images that she photographed with a Scanning Electron Microscope as part of her scientific work as a Fisheries Biologist. Just after she retired, she published a collection of the most artful images taken during 30 years of scientific research. The book was written so that people of all interests could see the microscopic beauty of marine organisms. The book Sea Unseen: Scanning Electron microscopy images from Puget Sound and Beyond, was printed through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric and Administration by the US Government Printing Office. Below are examples of a few microscopic images and the fiber art inspired by the images.

“Gems of the Ocean” Art Quilt Exhibit, March 10-12

“Gems of the Ocean” at Yachats Commons, 441 Hwy 101 N, Yachats, Oregon.

Three of Carla Stehr’s pieces will be included in “Gems of the Ocean,” the first annual ocean-themed art quilt exhibit. The show is sponsored by Ocean Artistry, an organization that supports and promotes music, dance and art exhibitions in the Yachats area.

SDA member Mary M. Ashton is participating in “In the Gallery—Northwest Designer Craftsmen” March 3–March 30 at Koch Gallery—Vashon Center for the Arts, 19600 Vashon Highway, Vashon Island.

The Koch (pronounced “Kahsh”) Gallery shows work in a wide range of media and subject matter including paintings, sculpture, mixed media, photography, wood, glass, ceramics and fiber. Gallery hours: Monday through Friday 10–5, Saturday Noon–5. Hope you can make an excursion and see all of the work of so many excellent artists!

This Friday in Port Townsend! There will be a reception for the North Peninsula SDA group show “Surface Design at the Carnegie” at the Carnegie Library, from 6–7:30 p.m. One of the artists, Jeannie McMacken, took the following snapshots of the show hanging (and also designed the flyer above).

SDA-North Peninsula Chapter leader Barbara Houshmand, who curated the “Surface Design at the Carnegie” show, adds a hanging line to a piece for display.

Northwind Arts Center is responsible for curating the shows at the Carnegie Library. SDA-North Peninsula was chosen to exhibit through June. Northwind volunteer Bill Brennan hangs a series of small fiber art pieces.

Jean Marie Tarascio, curator of “The ABC of Surface Design” group installation, which is hung in the lower part of the library. All letters were limited to 12 inches in height, and had to be light enough to be suspended from fishing line. They were to be examples of surface design techniques. After the showing at the Carnegie Library, the installation will head to the Port Angeles Library.

Many hands helped hang the group show. Cheri Kopp’s husband Peter installs the final letter—E. A total of 21 artists created 34 letters that are suspended above the stacks at the Carnegie Library.

Volunteers Needed
Please consider signing up for a job to help make this show truly outstanding. Most jobs take only 2 hours of your time. We particularly need people to check in art on February 27th at the Schack. That day Christina and I will be driving a van to pack up the show at Northwind and delivering the art to the Schack. We need people to sit at the table at the Schack to accept the regional art that is delivered. You can view a copy of the e-Postcard by clicking here and then right click to save to your computer. Please send out to your friends, family, or email lists and post on your Facebook or other website/blog/social media to help get the word out about this magnificent exhibition!

Video Project (Optional)
We plan to have a looping video of SDA artists working in their studios during the exhibition. We would love to include a video by you. Segments from multiple artists will be compiled into a single video. Individual videos should be 2-5 minutes long. Ensure there is enough light to see your art. Captions are fine, but we do not recommend audio. If you do have audio, ensure that any narration is strong and clear. (we recommend you write what you want to say and learn it by heart before filming.) We may edit, dependent upon time, quality of video, and number of videos submitted. Video can be made with cell phone, but the quality of video will depend on phone quality. Video that is determined to not be of sufficient quality may not be used. When you have a completed video, send an email to event.surfacedesignwa@gmail.com and we will send you a Dropbox link to upload your video file to. All videos need to be in mp3 format.

Surface Design Examples (Optional)
As part of our educational program, we would like to show the viewers some works in progress. If you have some samples which show your working methods or steps involved, include these in with the package of your art. It would be useful to include a few words of explanation to aid the docents to use as they explain the work. Please mark them with your name and artwork inventory number and include a list of what you have supplied, so they can be returned to you with your artwork. The advantage of submitting work-in-progress is that your work may be highlighted by docents.
