SDA-WA members Terry Berg, Barbara O’Steen, Therese Stein and Becky Wachtman have pieces in “Please Touch: A Tactile Art Exhibition at Mount Baker Neighborhood Center for the Arts. The reception was October 13.

An “Arpilleras” exhibit is also on display to touch. Fresia Valdivia, assisted by SDA member Terry Berg, taught a group of women every Saturday for 12 weeks to choose recycled materials, design, hand sew and embellish 18 x 18 fabric squares. Each woman interpreted and translated photos from the January 21 Women’s March into social justice statements.

Also starting Thursday, October 5, SDA member Cicelia Ross-Gotta​ had an opening at Gramma Poetry for the exhibition of “I Love You Are You Okay,” her 2017 University of Washington Sculpture MFA thesis installation.

The installation will be up through October and November, with a collaborative performative event happening with/around the installation at Gramma Poetry Saturday, November 11 with artist Michael Swaine. Her installation and statement are featured here, on Gramma weekly.

SDA-North Peninsula member and visual artist Cheri Kopp is leading a workshop designed to exercise your creative muscle via series of process-based exercises. Explore your creative process with an immersive weekend class on the Olympic Peninsula.

Drawing on her love of cast-off materials, and incorporating stitching, Cheri will lead participants in exploration of a materials-based art-making process. Using simple resources – scissors, tape and paperboard packaging (cereal boxes, etc.) – and repurposing words and images intended to market products, you’ll find your own messages, creating a series of small collages.

They have invited Barbara De Pirro and four other artists to create works specifically designed for their Poetry Garden centered on the theme of “Seattle Center Festál 20.” Festál at Seattle Center is a free series of annual ethnically-related festivals, and it is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

$330This is an introductory to advanced course taught by SDA-WA member Zia Gipson in the ancient Korean technique of joomchi or felted paper. In this context the word ‘felted’ means that this method of fusing papers uses some of the same hand tools and styles of manipulation that one can use in making felt from wool fiber. In both cases, the main tools are the hands and water. Having studied papermaking for several years and traveled extensively in Asia I will also talk about the uses of paper in traditional rural societies in Korea and Japan.

The full two days will include a history of hand paper making using long fiber papers especially mulberry fiber as it is still practiced around the world. We’ll build collages without glue or other usual methods of adhesion, relying instead on the natural process of papermaking. Once we’ve worked our paper by rolling and by hand we can shape the papers into a three-dimensional form or cast the assembled layers into strong, stiff shapes. We’ll explore the options for final texture from a soft, fabric like finished product to a stiff, highly crumpled sheet. Color in your composition will come via the dyes in the long fiber papers you use or in surface design at any stage of the process… as always color and pattern can be an important or subtle element in your composition. What you will do with the finished felted paper is up to you… shape into jewelry or a vessel and prepare for hanging on the wall. Register here.

When to use bubble wrap, when to use a rug liner, when to use a drop-cloth or a sheet in felt making? Have you ever felted a piece and you thought it wasn’t successful? Did the silk not stick to the wool? Did you cut the wrong side of the slippers? Are the edges of the felt ruffly and uneven? Did the embellishments separate from the felt? Did the design not turn out the way it was planned? Have you ever started a project but did not really have the time to finish up?In this workshop, Flóra gathered a variety of felt-saving techniques, that are usually the highlights of different workshops. Several tools and techniques will be introduced for troubleshooting accidents of all kinds, that might happen during felt making. Bring your unfinished/unsuccessful piece(s) to the class. We’ll group the items with similarities and discuss all the possibilities to save the piece(s) and give it/them a new life. North Peninsula Chapter Fiber Revolution Show

Port Angeles Fine Arts Center
September 16–November 15

Fiber Revolution is the next exhibition scheduled at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center. The art was created by members of the WA State Surface Design Association—North Peninsula Chapter, which encompasses Jefferson, Clallam and Kitsap counties.

Thirty-nine pieces from 26 artists are displayed, all differing in expression. The only commonality is the use of fiber. Fiber can be natural or synthetic, or can be any substance that acts like or resembles a fiber. For example, an installation woven with copper and stainless steel threads is displayed comfortably next to a garment made from wool and dyed with local botanicals.

The Revolution is taking a time-honored process and changing it up, moving it along and breaking some rules. The resulting art is created outside the bounds of tradition. All work was completed in the last 18 months; most in the last three.

The show opened September 16 and runs through November 15. Exhibiting artists will make presentations throughout the run of the exhibit.

As part of her “Talk on Art Appraisal” for the SDA Eastside meeting, Dawn Laurant will talk about her experience as an appraiser and what criteria she uses when evaluating art.

The presentation is 30 minutes, followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer session. The following topics will be covered during the presentation:

  • What is an appraisal, and how does an appraiser conclude value of an artwork
  • Overview of current art market and trends
  • Appraising contemporary art and textile/fiber art

About Dawn
Dawn Laurant, Kirkland Cultural Arts Commissioner and Fine Art Appraiser, is certified by the American Society of Appraisers. More recently, she has worked as an auction specialist for Pacific Galleries in Seattle, and as a senior art broker with Art Brokerage Inc., where she specialized in building private and corporate collections in fine and contemporary art.

She has an extensive background in the arts, spanning a 30-year career working with museums and nonprofit organizations as a curator, as an arts educator, and as an exhibit developer. Her previous work includes exhibits and programs at VALA Eastside, Ryan James Fine Arts, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Oakland Museum and the Marin County History Museum.

Join SDA member Sara Goodman at Pacific NorthWest Art School for a five-day dyeing class that will cover the basics of using natural dyes, including:

  • Proper scouring of cellulose and protein substrates
  • How to use three mordants: alum, iron, and Symplocos (a natural aluminum bio-accumulator plant that grows in the rain forests of Indonesia)
  • How to get a range of colors by combining alum and iron mordants in different proportions
  • Using iron as a color changer, as a mordant and in the dye bath, to obtain a range of beautiful blacks
  • Using mordants in both hot and cold preparations for total immersion and thickened surface applications
  • Discharging mordants using citric acid or lemon juice
  • Setting mordants with chalk and wheat bran

Dyeing:

  • Immersion dyeing using concentrated dye extracts, dry and fresh materials
  • Making thickened stock solutions for painting, printing, silk screening etc.
  • Making and maintaining a natural fermentation indigo vat over-dyeing for complex colors
  • Light fastness and setting dyes using curing and steaming

Students will leave the class with:

  • Notebook containing instructions and recipes for all the mordant and dye procedures from the class
  • Samples that illustrate each of the procedures we did linked to the notebook
  • Cloth color chart illustrating all the mordants crossed with all the dyes
  • Samples of your own, on your own cloth

Using Western-European papermaking techniques, students will explore variations on traditional vat sheet forming.  Discussions will include various equipment, ways of making pulp, recycling, inclusions, layering, making large sheets from small frame and intro to three-dimensional techniques.

Pulp Painting and Big Paper
Pulp painting is a form of painting paper on paper. Paper pulp, usually cotton, is overbeaten to make a fine slurry which is then pigmented to form a personal palette. These specially pigmented pulps are applied to a freshly pulled sheet of paper using a variety of techniques to execute the desired effect or image. The painting can be very abstract or very exacting depending upon the tools used. Application can be free hand or with the aid of tools, stencils, monoprints and a variety of additives. It is very fluid and rather that a work on paper, the image is the final work of paper. The result may be complete or the pulp painting may be augmented by printmaking, collage or any other technique that might be enjoyed by the artist. It is a great crossover technique to expand an artist’s skills.

All classes have a materials fee of $25. Classes are held at the Seattle studio in the University/Roosevelt area (directions are sent prior to class). SDA member Mary M. Ashton is participating in “In the Gallery—Northwest Designer Craftsmen” March 3–March 30 at Koch Gallery—Vashon Center for the Arts, 19600 Vashon Highway, Vashon Island.

The Koch (pronounced “Kahsh”) Gallery shows work in a wide range of media and subject matter including paintings, sculpture, mixed media, photography, wood, glass, ceramics and fiber. Gallery hours: Monday through Friday 10–5, Saturday Noon–5. Hope you can make an excursion and see all of the work of so many excellent artists!

This Friday in Port Townsend! There will be a reception for the North Peninsula SDA group show “Surface Design at the Carnegie” at the Carnegie Library, from 6–7:30 p.m. One of the artists, Jeannie McMacken, took the following snapshots of the show hanging (and also designed the flyer above).

Northwind Arts Center is responsible for curating the shows at the Carnegie Library. SDA-North Peninsula was chosen to exhibit through June. Northwind volunteer Bill Brennan hangs a series of small fiber art pieces.

Jean Marie Tarascio, curator of “The ABC of Surface Design” group installation, which is hung in the lower part of the library. All letters were limited to 12 inches in height, and had to be light enough to be suspended from fishing line. They were to be examples of surface design techniques. After the showing at the Carnegie Library, the installation will head to the Port Angeles Library.

Many hands helped hang the group show. Cheri Kopp’s husband Peter installs the final letter—E. A total of 21 artists created 34 letters that are suspended above the stacks at the Carnegie Library.

Fiber Fusion Artists’ Talk Sunday

Our very successful traveling exhibition, Fiber Fusion, is now at the halfway point. It opened at the Northwind Arts Center in Port Townsend on February 2.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you are in for a treat—a great number of beautiful, intriguing, witty and questioning works in fiber! In neutral to vibrant colors! In all sizes! 2- and  3-D!

As part of the exhibition, you are invited to an artists’ talk and presentation on Sunday, February 12 from 1 to 2 p.m.

Cloth, Shadow, Line by Joyce Wilkerson

Joyce Wilkerson will tell us about her work “Cloth, Shadow, Line,” which pairs a textile fragment with a photograph. Joyce is primarily a weaver, and is also interested in printmaking and photography. In her work, she explores the greater whole created by the dialogue between the media.

Jeannie McMacken will introduce us to her ephemeral piece, “11-13-15  Dinner at La Belle Equipe Smoke Dress.” This is Jeannie’s emotional response to the recent terrorist attack in Paris. To express her horror and grief Jeannie experimented with unexpected materials, and presents us with a very moving work.

Judith Bird will describe the making of her piece “Zambia,” which combines two surfaces, one a handwoven and one a silk fabric, both dyed in contemporary interpretations of Japanese shibori techniques.

Discover a deeper connection to your creative self in this one-day workshop with internationally renowned artist Jane Dunnewold, on tour to help artists build creative stamina, dismantle their inner critics, and approach their art with more joy. A popular teacher, Jane’s lecture features prompts and exercises from her newest book, Creative Strength Training, with an emphasis on creating work that is uniquely yours. Play and work at the same time!

The workshop costs $95 for current SDA members, and early registration is encouraged; participation is limited to 20 students

Move your art forward with a one-to-one critique session with Jane at a private art studio in Richmond Beach. In this 40-minute session she will work with you to develop goals for your future work based on current interests and projects. This is an informal conversation to discuss ideas, direction, and works in progress. An emphasis on supportive and authentic discussion will inspire you to take your art to the next level.

Critique Sessions cost $60, and participation is limited to 8 artists.  You do not need to take the workshop to sign up for a critique session.

CRITIQUE REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

Contact Sharon Rowley (sharon@rowleyart.com) for available critiques slots between 9 am and noon, and 1 and 4 pm. Follow-up with payment to Julie at the address above. Your slot will be held for 2-3 days and released if your check is not received in that time.                  Your payment will be acknowledged by email.

Registration will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis until May 30, when registration opens to the public (The CST workshop is $125 for non-SDA participants) Payment by check is required to confirm your space.  If registration exceeds capacity, we will create a waiting list.

Refunds will be made up to 30 days in advance of the workshop (July 20, 2016); transfer of place is not available.

A supply list for the workshop will be emailed with confirmation of registration, and a short assignment will be emailed for those participating in the critique sessions.

Larkin Van Horn workshop for FB (1)

SDA-WA Member Larkin Van Horn is offering a workshop entitled: Vessels, Shrines, and Reliquaries.

Vessel: Anything that will hold or contain anything else

Shrine: Anything that commemorates or memorializes a person, place, or event

Reliquary: A combination of the two

 

 

Participants will choose from a variety of forms to explore as they wish and will design their own 2d or 3d structure.  In this one day class students will concentrate on one form.
