Members Sande Wascher-James,Mary Ashton, Danielle Bodine,Lois James,Zia Gipson, Dorothy McGuinness are artists featured in the upcoming show Paper Translations being held at the Kirkland Art Center (620 Market Street, Kirkland, WA) September 17th through November 19th, 2016.

The artists featured in Paper Translations transform the seemingly mundane material of paper by reinterpreting it into complex works of contemporary art through folding, staining, painting, cutting, casting, felting, tearing, sewing, and weaving, merging cultural tradition and personal memory to reintroduce us to paper in ways we have never seen before.

Opportunities

Eastside SDA members, your call is open for the Fiber Fusion show.

VALA Art Center SDA Regional Art Show — Entry Deadline 10/1/2016

Entrants must be a current member of the Surface Design Association (SDA) and live/work in the Seattle’s Eastside area (Renton, Fall City, North Bend, Redmond, Newcastle, Bellevue, Issaquah, Kirkland, Woodinville, Carnation, Medina, Mercer Island, Sammamish, Snoqualmie or Bothell). If there is any question about whether your location qualifies, please write event.surfacedesignwa@gmail.com and we will respond. SDA Membership is available at http://www.surfacedesign.org (Click “Join SDA”)

All entries must be original artwork created, conceived and executed entirely by you, the artist (or artists in the case of a collaborative piece.) Artwork from kits, tutorials, copies or done under instruction is ineligible. Eligible entries are those completed in 2014 to present.

Collaborative pieces will be accepted as long as ALL of the artists are members of SDA-WA

Art can be no larger than 12” wide and 12” high. 3-D items maximum of 12″ deep, need to be able to hang.

Fiber Art Now magazine has an open call for their juried exhibition Excellence in Fibers.

Yes, Excellence in Fibers is a juried exhibition in print, but this year we’re also having a full exhibition which will be held at the New Bedford Art Museum, New Bedford, Massachusetts, 1/25/17-3/19/17

FIVE CATEGORIES:

Vessel Forms/Basketry | Installation Works | Wearables

NEW FOR 2016

Twice as many works will be selected and shown
There will be five categories, a prize in each category ($300), and a Best in Show prize ($600)

Hello Artists! The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council is excited to announce a new exhibition opportunity. And a chance to support the Arts Council at the same time!

Registration and participation is open to all — no art background is required.

Hundreds of original artwork made and donated by individuals from all over the Northwest, of all ages and skill levels, will be received.

CRAFTING COMMUNITY: SDA 2016 INAUGURAL INTERNATIONAL EXHBITION IN PRINT

EXHIBITION IN PRINT: SDA member and non-member artists working in or inspired by fiber arts and/or textile media are invited to submit work for a juried issue of the Surface Design Journal entitled Crafting Community: SDA Inaugural International Exhibition in Print. Selected work will appear in print in the winter 2016 issue of the Surface Design Journal (publication date December 23, 2016).www.surfacedesign.org

GOAL: The goal of this exhibition in print is to showcase the breadth and depth of contemporary artists and designers working working with or inspired by fiber/textile materials and techniques. Artists and makers are encouraged to submit work of any size or format that demonstrates the innovative use of textile media, including nontraditional materials and techniques. In addition to traditional 2D and 3D forms, participants are encouraged to submit work that challenges and expands the contemporary definitions of textile/fiber-based art and design, such as digital art (design/animation), time arts (sound/video), performance art, conceptual art, land art, installation art, book art, textile design, fashion design, interior design, product design, and craft-as-social-practice.

Special consideration is given to work engaging the theme of Crafting Community. 2017 will mark Surface Design Association’s 40th anniversary of supporting and promoting contemporary textile/fiber-based art and education. Our dedicated SDA community is composed of passionate artists, designers, collectors, curators, educators, and students of all ages from all over the world. Creative practice grows in exciting new ways when we share what—and why—we make. This exhibition in print celebrates the incredible variety of our members’ most recent artistic achievements, and warmly invites others to add their voices to this inspiring collective conversation.

Works should be completed on or after January 1, 2013. SDA encourages established, emerging, international and student artists to participate.

JOURNAL OVERVIEW: A single guest juror/curator will work with the SDA Journal Editor, Marci McDade, to select all work for inclusion in a comprehensive print and digital edition of the Journal with full and detailed images as well as artist statements and essays addressing context and evolution of trends in contemporary textile arts.

All SDA members may download the complete Journal from SDA website. Artists whose work is selected will receive one complimentary print copy of the Journal. Print and digital versions of the Journal will be available for purchase on SDA website at http://www.surfacedesign.org

Foster/White Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibition with local textile artist Cameron Anne Mason.

The theme of nature and the evidence of human hands upon it permeates Mason’s work like the dyes used to color her hand-worked silks and velvet.

Deeply rooted in the Northwest Coast, Cameron Anne Mason’s relationship with nature is as much a part of her life as the artwork it inspires. Through deep meditations on our changing environment and by looking closely at our natural geography, Mason ardently layers and stitches her impressions into each sculpture. Her latest series, Branching, honors the history of the cloth she works with, embroider- ing stitch upon stitch parallel to a tree’s rings of growth.

Mason has been exhibiting her sculptures with Foster/White Gallery for several years. Her background in theater arts has also encouraged several installation projects throughout Seattle, including SAM Set the Table, MADArts, COCA’s Rootbound, the Bellevue Art Museum and this summer’s Bellwether sculpture exhibition at Bellevue City Hall. Mason has most recently been selected by Chateau Ste Michelle as the featured artist of their 2013 Artist Series Meritage to be released later this year.

Cameron Anne Mason’s work is in public and corporate collections throughout the Pacific Northwest and broader United States.

mary Mary O’Shaughnessy has a show of her new collage series: Hand Made Paper, Tea Bags, Image Transfers at Frame Works in the Under Town of Port Townsend (211 Taylor Street, suite B5).

Her art will be shown from July 2nd through July 30th, Monday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm. She’d love for you to stop by and check it out!

Dorothy McGuinness has had her piece Tetrahedron 3 accepted into the Fiberart International 2016 show in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania through August 21.

caryl Caryl Bryer Fallert has two pieces in the show Women by Women a new exhibition by The Surface Design Association: North Peninsula Chapter opened June 29 at Pippa’s Real Tea in downtown Port Townsend, WA. The show will run through the end of August. Fifteen of artists have interpreted the theme, Women by Women, in our respective fiber media to bring you a broad range of images and techniques.

Nan Leaman

Nan and WISD are showing some of their works at the La Connor Quilt Museum in the show Beyond The Surface. Beyond the Surface includes artwork using fiber and fabric as the basis for the work. Each artist has their own unique style and the process used to accomplish their work is as varied as the individual piece. Techniques include: dyeing, wrapping, felting, stitching, weaving, image transfer, beading, quilting, painting, printing, and collage.

Diane Williams

Diane is an artist participating in the Real Change Portrait Project. Her work (along with many others) will be on display at Seattle City Hall from March 1st through the end of April 2016. The opening reception is March 1st, from 2-4pm. Since the project began about four years ago, more than 30 artists have volunteered to paint a portrait of a Real Change vendor.

“I made a portrait quilt for the Real Change Portrait Project. It features 30 Real Change vendors on a city street like grid surrounded by crazy quilt scraps All seams are exposed and the binding is wonky because homelessness is not neat and finished. The quilting goes every which way because homelessness is crazy and unpredictable. It was featured on the cover of Real Change during the Winter Fund Drive in 2013.”

Caryl says “I’m very pleased to announce that I will be escorting a quilters safari to Kenya in January of 2017. Please join me to see the fabrics and fiber arts of Africa as well as the amazing wildlife and culture in this beautiful country. This is a deluxe tour with professional guides, great accommodations, and only four people per Land Rover on the game spotting runs.

“Unexpected Weavings”

An artist talk “How it’s made: Unexpected Weavings,” will be on Tuesday July 8^th at 6:30pm by SDA member, Dorothy McGuinness to coincide with her solo show at the Jansen Art Center. Dorothy will discuss her unique process of weaving forms and structures through the art of diagonal twill. Dorothy approaches her work as a puzzle, which drives her to discover new shapes and weaving innovations using watercolor paper, painted and cut into very narrow uniform strips to build unique and intriguing forms that are encoded with energy and elegance.

Dorothy’s show, “Unexpected Weavings,” at the Jansen Art Center in Lynden, from July 3^rd – August 1^st, 2014. Opening reception will be Thursday July 3^rd from 6-8pm.

$5 adults/ $3 children, seniors, and military.

The Schack Art Center is hosting their 19th Juried Art Show and several of our WA State Surface Design Association members were accepted into the show. You are invited to attend the Artist reception on June 19 from 5-8 pm.

Show dates: June 19-August 2, 2014

There is a wide variety of techniques and styles to enjoy, such as this painted, fused, collaged and stitched artwork depicting a heron by Gay Jensen.

Claire B Jones‘ piece is a 3-D sculpture created using free motion machine embroidery on canvas.

Samantha Frank has taken woven thread, cotton fabric, lace, beads, raw fleece to create three incredible woven sculptural headpieces.

“Headpieces: Mourning, Marriage and Fertility” by Samantha Frank

Nancy Loorem’s piece includes the use of Cast bronze, reed, old Japanese hand drawn calligraphy from texts.

Dorothy McGuinness has been influenced by traditional American and Native American basket weaving and has several pieces in the show.
