CALL FOR ENTRIES

While this past year of social isolation has been challenging, many of us have continued making art, often creating pieces that reflect a period that forced all of us to confront personal feelings and global issues in an unprecedented way.  Now, we are finally beginning to surface.Yet the pandemic represents only one interpretation of Surfacing.  The word has a range of meanings, from calls for social change to personal reflection to looking at ourselves and the world in an entirely different way.  And nowhere are we better able to express what Surfacing means to each of us than in our artwork.

Deadline for submissions: September 15, 2021.
The jurors will review all submissions. Each selected artist may have one image for the online gallery. Notifications will be sent October 15.

Requirements:
You may submit one or two pieces of work. You will need to submit one image per piece (plus one detail, if necessary to appreciate the technique) and will need to complete this google form entry for each image submission. Work must be made between 2019-2021.

Images must be 2000 pixels minimum on the shortest side. Max file size is 3 MB.

Please send your image(s) to Gabi Nirino at sdagnirino@gmail.com and use “SDA WA Surfacing submission” for the email subject line. The jurors will have access to the images you submit but will not see your names. Please make sure to name your image file with the nickname of your choice, and use this format: “nickname_title of piece”.jpg. More about the jurors. This month: Gail Harker

Gail Harker

A Canadian who moved to Britain in 1976 with her American husband and family, Gail studied art in Canada, England and Scotland. She completed both Parts 1 and 2 (Diploma) of the Cithy and Guilds Design and Embroidery course with Distinction in both parts. She was awarded the Senior Qualification of Licentiateship (LCGI) by the City and Guilds Institute and continued on teaching City and Guilds and becoming an External Verifier for student work.

Returning to the US with her family in 1995, she pioneered the establishment of the first City & Guilds Creative Studies Centers in North America. Gail founded and operates the Gail Harker Creative Studies Center in La Conner, Washington, for the last 25 years. Over her career, she has taught thousands of students, sharing her passion for embroidery, textiles and design.

She has authored five books on embroidery published in both Britain and the U.S.

Pat Herkal at Port Townsend Gallery

Pat Herkal is the featured artist at Port Townsend Gallery on Water Street in August. Her beadwork is paired with batik artist Melissa Bixby.Herkal’s work is a whimsical and colorful celebration of the natural world. Embellished with embroidery then beaded, her art features intricate hand sewn details. She mixes fiber, thread, beads and trinkets to create jewelry, sculptures, dolls and more.

Dorothy McGuinness has written a book on diagonal twill basketry in paper. The title is “The Art of Contemporary Woven Paper Basketry, Explorations in Diagonal Twill”. It will be available in September 2021 from Schiffer books or through Amazon. Congratulations!

SDA Members in Small Expressions at the Pacific Northwest Quilts & Fibers Arts Museum

Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. (HGA) organized its 2021 annual juried exhibit of small works: Small Expressions. Featuring 36 contemporary small-scale art works by artists from 21 states and 2 countries, Small Expressions will tour galleries in the United States from July 2021 through June 2022.

Terri and Dorothy participated in the Art in the Port event, during the Anacortes Art Festival. Terri won the Artistic Excellence Award, selected by Juror Carie Collver.

“Madrone” and “ Chinese Red Birch” are vessels from a series based on tree barks from around the world. Hand dyed fabrics, machine and hand stitched.

Gabriela (Gabi) Nirino was accepted in four shows:

10x10x10 Tieton, Tieton, WA. August 7-October 10 with the piece “Tanka” a small sculptural weave, made with corn husk fiber. Tanka means “hat” in Aymara language.

Edmonds Art Festival, Edmonds, WA. August 27-29 with “Chunche” . The piece won 2nd prize in 3D category. 

Shifting Tides, 14th Juried Art Exhibition. Columbia City Gallery, Seattle, WA. August 11-September 19, with “How to Make Your Own Sanctuary”. It is a group of 10 wood pieces based on the Argentine popular devotion of Gauchito Gil.

Earth Matters. Watermark Art Center, Bemidji, Minnesota. September 3-October 30. The work “Small Objects to Sow in a New World” is an installation of 22 pieces created with corn husk fiber.

Online Mixed Media Textiles & Acrylic

Discover a range of techniques, tips & tricks that can transform your Fiber Art! We will explore a series of GOLDEN Acrylic products that can be used to create incredible surfaces, textures and patterns! These methods can be used to create sculpture, basketry, vessels, installation or 2 dimensional art. The focus is not intended for ‘everyday’ wearable art however definitely a possibility for costume. This workshop will open your eyes to a whole new approach in working with textiles. More about the jurors. This month: Francesca Piñol

She holds a BA in Antropology by the University of Barcelona (UB) in 1995, an MA in Textile Design by the Catalonian Politecnique University (UPC), an MA in African Studies by the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) in 1996), an MA in ArtTherapy by the UB in 2004 , and at that moment she is doing her PhD, a research about Naturat Dyes and Digital Textile Design.

She extended studies with stages abroad: at the Skolen for Brugskunst (School of Design) of Copenhagen in 1989 and at CIETA (International d’Etude Centres des Textiles Anciens) of Lyons in 1994 and 95. Also some artistic residence has done as Contextile in Portugal in 2012 and Arctic Circle 2015 (15th expedition).

            Although it combines various techniques, materials and textures, weaving is the technique most commonly used with the incorporation of digital Jacquard technology and the color obtained from natural dyeing with materials from the surroundings, making unique pieces or short series.

Her collaboration between Art and Neuroscience, a crosstalk between professionals from arts and neuroscience, has been selected at the international competition Art of Neuroscience 2018 and awared with the Honorable Mention 2018.

            Her studio Laboratori Tèxtilis a space for research and experimentation with textures, natural color and digital fabric. It combines artistic creation with research and teaching.

Kumihimo Wishes: Current Times

“I am celebrating this moment when the collection of people’s strength, patience, creativity, compassion, and spirit comes together in this exhibition by presenting “Kumihimo Wishes: Current Times.”    

Kumihimo is a Japanese rope/cord making art form.  Traditionally people use a wooden tool called marudai or a floor loom to make elaborate designs.  Kumihimo came from China around the 8th century and was used for scrolls, sutras, swords, and armor.  During the 19th century, Kumihimo became a necessary item for wearing kimono.   

During this pandemic time I have been thinking about the power of “craft” deeply.  Handwork really helps while being isolated.  As a Japanese artist, I decided to share Kumihimo.  I made more than 365 Kumihimo kits, each containing a foam disk and 8 strands of yarns that I dyed with natural dyes.  I wanted to emphasize the numbers of days, one year, that seemed like a long time to experience the pandemic.    

Many people responded to the Kumhimo project and spread it quickly.  Some people returned it by mail and I was excited to open each package. Some people offered to introduce it to their friends and families.  It went to different states and even overseas.  I see that some people spent lots of time on their pieces besides weaving ropes.  I got so much energy from people’s positive responses and I am grateful to honor people’s handworks, creativity, and voices here.    

When I started this project, in November 2020, I thought that our life should be normal in one year.  I wrote senryu (similar to haiku) during spring 2020; looking at those now reminds me of what it was like to stay at home all the time with no people on the streets.  I can’t forget what it was like one year ago.  The numbers of people who got COVID19 became enormous all over the world and several waves seem to continue.  Although many countries are still suffering, vaccinations are changing our lives.  I am saddened to think of the people who lost family and friends.  I must express gratitude to the people who worked for others to save lives, helped by taking risks, and did something for others.  We have learned so much from our experiences and we should not forget it even after COVID is under control.  It is amazing to feel free without a mask and going to a restaurant and hugging friends! 

There are so many things that have been coming out from the ground that we haven’t seriously faced or confronted. As a Japanese female artist who lives in the US, I had a chance to think farther during this pandemic, particularly about race, human rights, and freedom.  I really wish that people in the world would become more connected instead of fighting.  I love the way that craft techniques have been passed from generation to generation. It creates very strong ties to human relationships peacefully. “

Online Printmaking for Collage

We will explore techniques using your own printed imagery to create inspirational Collage artworks! Learn the basics of creating monotype, collagraph, thermofax and relief printed images. All of this can be done without a press, using water based, slow drying GOLDEN acrylic paints. These methods create unique results; the pressure of printing creates texture and pattern not possible when painting directly on paper. Several examples & demonstrations will show how these prints can then be used in Collage & which products work best for gluing various weights of paper. Gain a broad understanding of product, material, method, tips & tricks.

Members Sande Wascher-James,Mary Ashton, Danielle Bodine,Lois James,Zia Gipson, Dorothy McGuinness are artists featured in the upcoming show Paper Translations being held at the Kirkland Art Center (620 Market Street, Kirkland, WA) September 17th through November 19th, 2016.

The artists featured in Paper Translations transform the seemingly mundane material of paper by reinterpreting it into complex works of contemporary art through folding, staining, painting, cutting, casting, felting, tearing, sewing, and weaving, merging cultural tradition and personal memory to reintroduce us to paper in ways we have never seen before.

Collaborative pieces will be accepted as long as ALL of the artists are members of SDA-WA

Art can be no larger than 12” wide and 12” high. 3-D items maximum of 12″ deep, need to be able to hang.

CRAFTING COMMUNITY: SDA 2016 INAUGURAL INTERNATIONAL EXHBITION IN PRINT 

EXHIBITION IN PRINT: SDA member and non-member artists working in or inspired by fiber arts and/or textile media are invited to submit work for a juried issue of the Surface Design Journal entitled Crafting Community: SDA Inaugural International Exhibition in Print. Selected work will appear in print in the winter 2016 issue of the Surface Design Journal (publication date December 23, 2016).www.surfacedesign.org

GOAL: The goal of this exhibition in print is to showcase the breadth and depth of contemporary artists and designers working working with or inspired by fiber/textile materials and techniques. Artists and makers are encouraged to submit work of any size or format that demonstrates the innovative use of textile media, including nontraditional materials and techniques. In addition to traditional 2D and 3D forms, participants are encouraged to submit work that challenges and expands the contemporary definitions of textile/fiber-based art and design, such as digital art (design/animation), time arts (sound/video), performance art, conceptual art, land art, installation art, book art, textile design, fashion design, interior design, product design, and craft-as-social-practice.

Special consideration is given to work engaging the theme of Crafting Community. 2017 will mark Surface Design Association’s 40th anniversary of supporting and promoting contemporary textile/fiber-based art and education. Our dedicated SDA community is composed of passionate artists, designers, collectors, curators, educators, and students of all ages from all over the world. Creative practice grows in exciting new ways when we share what—and why—we make. This exhibition in print celebrates the incredible variety of our members’ most recent artistic achievements, and warmly invites others to add their voices to this inspiring collective conversation.

Works should be completed on or after January 1, 2013. SDA encourages established, emerging, international and student artists to participate.

JOURNAL OVERVIEW: A single guest juror/curator will work with the SDA Journal Editor, Marci McDade, to select all work for inclusion in a comprehensive print and digital edition of the Journal with full and detailed images as well as artist statements and essays addressing context and evolution of trends in contemporary textile arts.

All SDA members may download the complete Journal from SDA website. Artists whose work is selected will receive one complimentary print copy of the Journal. Print and digital versions of the Journal will be available for purchase on SDA website at http://www.surfacedesign.org

Hi SDA-WA!  The Fiber Fusion show will soon be traveling to Redmond where it will reside at VALA.  In conjunction with the show moving to VALA/Redmond, we will have several opportunities to participate in related events.  The first opportunity is to teach (or take!) a class at the Redmond Senior Center.    We will post more about the class once it’s finalized.  If you’re interested in teaching a class, please see the call below!

Call for teachers:

We are looking for a SDA member volunteer to teach a free 2 hour community class/ demonstration in conjunction with the Fiber Fusion exhibition in Redmond. The class will be held at the Redmond Sr Center in a classroom with a sink, so wet processes are possible. The Senior Center has reserved Wednesday November 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for this event. This is an excellent opportunity to try out a class idea, generate potential students for a longer paid class you’re offering, or get some teaching experience on your resume.

Call to Artists: Schack-toberfest, September 15-25

We know summer hasn’t (officially) started yet, but we’re already seeking harvest-themed artwork for Schack-toferbest. The glass pumpkin patch has been extended to 10 days for 2016 and we need paintings, photography, ceramics, and more to complete the festive atmosphere.

Artists interested in submitting their work should read the complete call to artists on our website. Deadline for submissions is August 15, 2016.

The Shoreline – Lake Forest Park Arts Council is seeking proposals from local and regional artists who wish to teach during their Fall 2016 & Spring 2017 Create & Make Workshop Series, held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:30pm in Shoreline. All workshops are ticketed, geared towards adults, and capped at 20 students.

Teaching artists will receive a $250 stipend to cover teaching fees and materials for teaching one two-hour workshop. We provide space, tables, and students; you provide materials, knowledge, and fun.

Our own member Debra Calkins has put out a call for art:

Member Debra Calkins has posted a call for art in hopes of bringing attention to a very important issue!  She is looking for 2-D art from any medium to participate.  Here are the details:

Calkins Unmade Bed

83% of the victims of the sex slave trade in America are US citizens. 40% of them are children. Unmade Bed is an exhibit about sexual trafficking which would include the work of artists; their reactions, feelings, and thoughts on this inhumane practice.

I would also like to invite those who would consider expressing the denial around this topic. Art carries powerful messages and has healing power. We hold in our hands, hearts and minds the ability to stand up to this injustice.

This will be a traveling exhibit with 3 – 5 venues. Each of the venues will be two days to four days. The first venue is at WICA (Whidbey Island Center for the Arts) in Langley, WA on Whidbey Island opening on October 7, 2016. The traveling will be completed by the end of 2017. Depending on the size of the venue, not all art will be shown in every venue.

Each artist will receive a catalog of the exhibit.

Docent training will be available for anyone wishing to spend time with the exhibit while it is installed, talking with visitors and assisting with any purchase inquiries.

I will be jurying for suitability and space availability, as well as for the size requirements for our largest venue.

Silk Painting Example 1 – Hibiscus

You could begin with An Introduction to Silk Painting  – a workshop being taught by SDA-WA member, Rebecca Wachtman.  Do you love the idea of painting your a scarf that is uniquely your own, or perhaps you’re thinking bigger – painting fabric for an art project.  An Introduction to Silk Painting workshop is just the thing to get your feet wet with a small project that will teach you the basics!

 

This workshop will be teaching you about working in the Serti Technique. Serti means “closing”, “Wall”, or Fence”…what it really refers to is using a resist to stop the dye from flowing into undesired areas of your painting.

Silk Painting Example 2 – Crocus

Learn how to select silks, silk dying and painting basics, color mixing and fun texture techniques.  Each student will apply resist to create a floral pattern and then paint their own, hand-dyed/hand-painted, 12″ square of silk art.   The workshop has a great price too!  $50 for Allied Arts Gallery members and $60 for non-members. Ice Dyeing Example

Did you know that paint sits on the surface, and that dye chemically bonds with the fabric? The way dyes bond to fabric is the reason why dyed fabrics can be washed and rarely lose color.  Continue your Fiber Fusion education with a workshop on resists and dyeing using modern Shibori techniques with the added bonus of getting to take home your own ice-dyeing packet (which you’ll start in class but get to finish on your own).

Folds-Resist Example

Rebecca will lead you through several different Shibori-resist techniques which you will bring home as set of samples to inspire you, or to use in your next project.  The workshop is titled Resisting Your Dyes with an Ice Kicker, and will be held on June 11th, 2016 from 1pm-4pm.  It’s price is $35 for Allied Arts Gallery members and $45 for non-members. Allied Arts will also be holding a workshop on wool carding called Creative Carding (taught by Kim Perkins). It is a non-profit, inter-faith organization, that was founded in 1995 by clergy, artists and community volunteers interested in expressions of spirituality in the arts. Artist Statement: Continuing my cosmological landscape series, this triptych is inspired by the movement of people across the land–from traditional aboriginal migration to modern-day touring from Sydney to Adelaide.

Materials & Techniques: Materials: Hand-dyed cotton fabric, cotton thread, polyester batting, fusible interfacing, commercial printed cotton backing. Techniques: Procion dyeing, textile paint stamping, discharge paste dye removal, piecing, quilting.

Artist Statement: Although shark skin looks smooth, it is covered with tiny tooth-like denticles that can only be seen with a microscope. This is inspired by an image of dogfish shark skin denticles that I photographed with a scanning electron microscope during my career as a Fisheries Biologist.

Materials & Techniques: Materials are cotton fabric, stiff interfacing, wool batting, fabric paint and Liquitex ink. Faced openings were made in the quilt sandwich and then it was quilted with polyester thread. Layers of diluted paint were added after stitching. Stiff double-sided fusible interfacing was used to form the denticles. A grey patterned batik fabric was sewn over the denticle shape (much like facing a collar). Ink and paint were applied to the denticles to enhance the batik fabric. Denticles were inserted through the quilt openings and stitched to a backing of painted fabric.

Artist Statement: Whether you see this art as two tree trunks, one hollow stump or something else, the image and words are meant to convey a message of the value we receive from trees standing in a forest; providing oxygen that replaces poisonous carbon dioxide for decades.

Materials & Techniques: Fabrics of wool, cotton pique, cotton/polyester, satin, and cotton batting. Appliqué by hand and machine embroidery and couching with yarn, weaving, knitting, crochet, stuffing, trapunto, quilting.

Artist Statement: On any given evening during my growing-up years, you could find my father at his watch-repair bench in a corner of our home, working among draws filled with tens of thousands of sparkling, nearly microscopic watch parts, springs, screws, balance wheels, jewels, stems, faces, hands, and crystals. When he died at the age of 103, the twelve-drawer cabinet which sat next to his workbench, still contained all its tools and glowing little parts, organized in rows of tiny tins, capsules, and clear plastic boxes.

Materials & Techniques: Original photography, digital printing, watch movements, watch faces, cotton fabric, wool batting, polyester thread. This is a completely double sided piece.

Fiber Fusion Exhibition Venue at Allied Arts Gallery at the Park

SDA WA is going to have a traveling exhibit!

Whether one of your pieces has been accepted in the Fiber Fusion Exhibition or you just want to see the show,  you need to make your plans now to travel to Richland, WA and the Allied Arts Gallery in the Park for the first venue of the traveling show.  The opening reception will be held June 5, 1-3 at the Gallery in the Park, 89 Lee Blvd., Richland, WA 99352.  Awards will be presented and juror Layne Goldsmith will speak about the jury process.   Come expecting beautiful weather in Richland where the temperature ranges from a high of 78˚F and a low of 52˚F, cooling off delightfully at night.  The exhibition runs June 1-23.
