Call for a volunteer to teach a 2 hour class in Redmond

Hi SDA-WA!  The Fiber Fusion show will soon be traveling to Redmond where it will reside at VALA.  In conjunction with the show moving to VALA/Redmond, we will have several opportunities to participate in related events.  The first opportunity is to teach (or take!) a class at the Redmond Senior Center.    We will post more about the class once it’s finalized.  If you’re interested in teaching a class, please see the call below!

Call for teachers:

We are looking for a SDA member volunteer to teach a free 2 hour community class/ demonstration in conjunction with the Fiber Fusion exhibition in Redmond. The class will be held at the Redmond Sr Center in a classroom with a sink, so wet processes are possible. The Senior Center has reserved Wednesday November 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for this event. This is an excellent opportunity to try out a class idea, generate potential students for a longer paid class you’re offering, or get some teaching experience on your resume.

Deadline for proposals is Wednesday August 24 at 7 pm. Please send a short description of what you will do / offer and a very short description of yourself. If chosen, these will be published in the Redmond Parks & Recreation catalogue. Please send to event.surfacedesignwa@gmail.com

Member Activities for July 2016

Hi Everyone!  Here is the latest news about our members as well as some opportunities to participate in.

__________________________________________________________________

sharon rowleyMember Sharon Rowley is a Featured Artist Speaks on Jane Dunnewold Studio’s website. You can see her video and learn more about her art there.

“Like a Tibetan prayer flag, I create art to send my wishes for peace and happiness into the universe.  Over two decades of exploring Buddhism and traveling to the sacred temples, canyons and mountain-tops of the world, these phrases of loving kindness (may you be happy, live in peace, in safety, in health, and with ease) have resonated strongly.

My art explores both the prayer flag’s form and the spirituality of its messages.  Some of my flags reflect my expansive hopes for all people, others are very personal hopes for myself and those near me.  All are prayers from my heart.”  Sharon

paper transformed

Paper Transformed II is the second exhibition of the work of five SDA WA members and three other Western Washington artists who transform machine and handmade paper into artist books, sculpture, jewelry, baskets and other visual objects. Dona Anderson, Mary Ashton (www.maryashtonstudio.com), Danielle Bodine ( www.daniellebodine.com), Zia Gipson (www.ziagipson.com), Lois James ( www.loisjamespaper.com), Dorothy McGuinness (www.dorothymcguinnessbasket.com), Jean-Marie Tarascio and Sande Wascher-James (presented by Priscilla Juvelis,Inc. (rare and artists books) all use paper for its inherent infinitely malleable character, not just as a substrate for traditional artists’ media. To paraphrase philosopher and communication theorist Marshall McLuhan, Paper Transformed is an exhibition where “the paper is the medium and the message.”

The paper work of Lois James, Zia Gipson and Danielle Bodine carries the record of cultural tradition, personal memory and story-telling. Dona Anderson’s and Mary Ashton’s paper sculpture resonates with the living things which give the work its connection to nature. Jean-Marie Tarascio and Sande Wascher-James artist books celebrate paper’s long history of being used to make books. Dorothy McGuinness’s intricate paper baskets are made from richly colored and patterned paper cut with surgical precision then folded and woven into rhythmic shapes. The eight artists in “Paper Transformed” show us how paper is infinitely alterable, taking the observer from the flat smooth surface we use daily to record the most mundane of life’s events to the richly textured surfaces of handmade three-dimensional objects.

Member Activities Updates For May 2016

Hi SDA-WA!

Here are upcoming activities for and from our members!!

Member Activities

Member Debra Calkins has posted a call for art in hopes of bringing attention to a very important issue!  She is looking for 2-D art from any medium to participate.  Here are the details:

Calkins Unmade Bed

83% of the victims of the sex slave trade in America are US citizens. 40% of them are children. Unmade Bed is an exhibit about sexual trafficking which would include the work of artists; their reactions, feelings, and thoughts on this inhumane practice.

I would also like to invite those who would consider expressing the denial around this topic. Art carries powerful messages and has healing power. We hold in our hands, hearts and minds the ability to stand up to this injustice.

This will be a traveling exhibit with 3 – 5 venues. Each of the venues will be two days to four days. The first venue is at WICA (Whidbey Island Center for the Arts) in Langley, WA on Whidbey Island opening on October 7, 2016. The traveling will be completed by the end of 2017. Depending on the size of the venue, not all art will be shown in every venue.

Each artist will receive a catalog of the exhibit.

Docent training will be available for anyone wishing to spend time with the exhibit while it is installed, talking with visitors and assisting with any purchase inquiries.

I will be jurying for suitability and space availability, as well as for the size requirements for our largest venue.

2-D art any medium

All art must be ready to install with a hanging wire or sleeve and slat.

Tips on Shipping Your Artwork for the SDA WA Fiber Fusion Exhibition

Tips on Shipping Your Artwork for the SDA WA Fiber Fusion Exhibition         by Vicki Gerton

I would like to thank Laura Russell at 23 Sandy Gallery in Portland, OR for most of these very good ideas on shipping artwork!

Since this is a traveling show, your shipping boxes will be carefully stored while your artwork is on exhibit and your artwork to be stored inside your own box between venues and for transporting to the next venue.

PACKAGING

  • Ship your artwork in a sturdy box or a tube, not in bubble mailer or envelop. This box or tube should be sturdy enough to last through round trip shipping and the travel between venues.
  • Inside the box or tube, place your artwork in a plastic bag, allowing a margin all around inside the box. Pad this margin with bubble wrap or other padding material.  DO NOT USE PEANUTS–they make a mess.  If you use tape, use low tack tape (blue painting tape works well).  Do not use clear packing tape which must be cut with scissors or a knife risking cutting your precious artwork.

  • Label your packing material with your name and title of the piece.
  • Include a packing slip inside the box with your name, address and contact information, the recipient’s address, title of your artwork(s), quantity sent, retail price or insurance value. Also include a photo of your artwork for quick identification of what artwork goes in your box (low resolution or snapshot is ok).
  • If your piece requires special instructions for hanging, include these in with the packing slip.
  • Check with shipper as to tape requirements on outside of box. Never use duct tape because it does not adhere properly to cardboard.
  • You must also include a prepaid return shipping label so your artwork can be shipped back to you after the showing in the last venue.

SHIPPING

  • For the least expensive ground shipping, plan to ship a week before the work needs to arrive at destination. If you ship on a Monday, your artwork will probably spend the least time in transit.
  • FedEx Ground is good and they provide excellent tracking. You will be able to generate a pre-paid return label.  FedEx also has a shipping time calculator to help you know when to send your package off.
  • United States Postal Service (USPS) is another good option. There is some tracking on priority packages.  However, they will not be able to generate return shipping labels in advance.  You can buy enough stamps, but that requires standing in line for any package over 13 ounces.
  • UPS is OK but some report problems.
  • FedEx and UPS allow you to open an account online. You can create shipping labels online and have your credit card billed.  You can also print your return label and you will not be charged until your package is actually sent back to you.  You weigh your package yourself on your studio or kitchen scale.

INSURANCE

  • You are responsible for any insurance you wish to put on your artwork during the shipping to and from the Fiber Fusion Exhibition.
  • FedEx will not insure over $500 value.
  • To collect any claims from the shipper you will need to prove the value of your claim. Some shippers only pay materials, and some will pay only the wholesale value.
  • Some retail shipping services have third party insurance services.
