Lucid Gallery Installation by Barbara De Pirro

DePirro.lucid.03
Exhibit is open May 23 – June 30, 2013

Special Artist’s Presentation – Friday, May 24, 4pm

Followed by the Artist’s Reception 4:30 to 6pm

De Pirro’s atmospheric installation creates interplay between light and shadow: ever changing patterns with the shifting of light, swaying gently with the delicate flow of air. Take a deep breath and allow your imagination to wander within this ethereal space.

“I am fascinated by the brilliance and resilience of nature while, at the same time,DePirro.lucid.headshot.02 its fragility & vulnerability. I surround myself with its many forms, surfaces and textures. Nature is as much a part of my life as it is the impetus for all my recent work.”

Cameron Anne Mason’s Show “Madrone” Opens March 7th

(Click on images to enlarge them.)

March 7 – 30, 2013
Foster/White Gallery
220 3rd Ave S #100
Seattle, WA 98104

Cameron Anne Mason’s relationship with nature is as much a part of her life as the artwork it inspires. Where we see stone and trees, Mason sees history and strength. Her latest series, Madrone, honors the Madrone trees which line Puget Sound’s shores. Their vibrant colors and layered depth are captured in carefully dyed, stitched and constructed textile sculptures.

Mason is fascinated not only by the strength of these trees, but their fragility, and the way in which both of those characteristics relate to fabric and her work. “Fabric is strong, its threads interwoven to create the cloth that swaddles us from birth to death, much like the roots of the Madrones bind the rocky soil together. And yet, cut just one thread and a weak point is created in the whole cloth.” The structure in her work is self-sustaining, through the layering of her hand dyed fabrics. Mason builds her landscapes up, and tells their stories with stitch.

Mason has been exhibiting her sculptures with Foster/White Gallery for several years. Her background in theater arts has also encouraged several installation projects throughout Seattle, including SAM Set the Table, MAD Arts, COCA’s Rootbound and the Bellevue Art Museum. Mason was most recently honored with a solo exhibition at the Oregon State University’s Fairbanks Art Gallery.

Call For Art: “Talking Heads, a Contemporary Take on Headdresses”

This is courtesy of our fellow SDA members from BC!

This exhibition is open to all SDA members – you don’t have to reside in BC! The CFE, Submission Guidelines and Entry Form can all be found on our website and our blog (see below).

Talking Heads, a Contemporary Take on Headdresses

The North Van Community Arts Council, in partnership with The Surface Design Association, BC, will present Talking Heads, a Contemporary Take on Headdresses, at the Cityscape Community Art Gallery, North Vancouver, from July 26 to Sept 7, 2013. The exhibition opening will be July 25th from 7-9pm.

This juried exhibition will showcase works inspired by historical and/or cultural headdresses.

Headdresses, whether practical or ceremonial, have traditionally made a statement about the wearer and their cultural community. Our contemporary take on these historical artifacts will similarly make a statement about ourselves and our own cultural environments, while exploring an exciting diversity of techniques and media, as well as innovative approaches to the theme.

We are interested in your contemporary headdress which uses a cultural artifact as inspiration – it doesn’t have to be wearable, and it can be a two-dimensional interpretation.

The exhibition is open to all fibre artists who are members of the Surface Design Association. Membership information can be found on the SDA website.

If you have any questions you may also contact Jennifer Love.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the Ryther’s event such a success!

Many thanks to all of you who contributed materials and time for the project at Ryther. Lots of supplies were dropped off at my house and we had a hard working team here last week cutting paper, gluing reinforced tops on the flags, punching holes for the ribbon and cutting ribbon to tie the flags together. Yesterday, there was an enthusiastic group of young people making banners. One of the kids commented that it was so nice to have something special to do since they are still on break from school and getting a bit bored. The kids seemed proud of their creations and will now have something cheerful to hang in their rooms.

Clay, the volunteer coordinator from Ryther, put a photo and thank you on Facebook and you can see one of the kids (face excluded) holding their banner by clicking HERE.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this such a success!

 Happy new Year!
