Larkin Van Horn workshop for FB (1)

SDA-WA Member Larkin Van Horn is offering a workshop entitled: Vessels, Shrines, and Reliquaries.

Vessel: Anything that will hold or contain anything else

Shrine: Anything that commemorates or memorializes a person, place, or event

Reliquary: A combination of the two

Participants will choose from a variety of forms to explore as they wish and will design their own 2d or 3d structure. In this one day class students will concentrate on one form.

Date: Thursday, June 2nd, 2016

Time: 9:30am-4:00pm (includes a 30 minute lunch break)

The Whidbey Island Garden Tour attracts up to 1000 visitors who are eager to buy something to commemorate what is always a wonderful day. You are invited to spend the day at one of the gardens displaying and selling your work.

The Whidbey Island Garden Tour is Saturday, June 18th, from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM.

This is your opportunity to be seen and celebrated! The first -ever traveling exhibition in the U.S. sponsored by the Surface Design Association will happen in Washington State in 2016-2017!
Premier venues: The exhibition will be hosted by four venues– Allied Arts in Richland; VALA Art Center in Redmond; Northwind Arts Center in Port Townsend; and the Schack Art Center in Everett.

Impressive Jurors: The jurors for the exhibition are Layne Goldsmith, professor of art at the University of Washington, Young Chang, owner of Gallery IMA in Seattle, and Rock Hushka, Chief Curator at the Tacoma Art Museum.

Teacher proposals needed (For Fiber Fusion Show!)

As you know SDA Washington Fiber Fusion juried exhibition is quickly approaching. We are excited to provide our visitors with opportunities to gain new skills and insights while attending the shows.

Classes will run in conjunction with each of the shows, and we are now looking for instructors to teach a variety of surface design and fiber related classes and workshops at Allied Arts Center and White Bluffs Quilt Museum, Richland WA.

Dates are 1-23 June, 2016.

Nan and WISD are showing some of their works at the La Connor Quilt Museum in the show Beyond The Surface. Beyond the Surface includes artwork using fiber and fabric as the basis for the work. Each artist has their own unique style and the process used to accomplish their work is as varied as the individual piece. Techniques include: dyeing, wrapping, felting, stitching, weaving, image transfer, beading, quilting, painting, printing, and collage.

Diane Williams

Diane is an artist participating in the Real Change Portrait Project. Her work (along with many others) will be on display at Seattle City Hall from March 1st through the end of April 2016. The opening reception is March 1st, from 2-4pm. Since the project began about four years ago, more than 30 artists have volunteered to paint a portrait of a Real Change vendor.

“I made a portrait quilt for the Real Change Portrait Project. It features 30 Real Change vendors on a city street like grid surrounded by crazy quilt scraps All seams are exposed and the binding is wonky because homelessness is not neat and finished. The quilting goes every which way because homelessness is crazy and unpredictable. It was featured on the cover of Real Change during the Winter Fund Drive in 2013.”

Caryl says “I’m very pleased to announce that I will be escorting a quilters safari to Kenya in January of 2017. Please join me to see the fabrics and fiber arts of Africa as well as the amazing wildlife and culture in this beautiful country. This is a deluxe tour with professional guides, great accommodations, and only four people per Land Rover on the game spotting runs.

The Fiber Fusion Call for Entry deadline
is 3 weeks away– March 20th.

Our wish is that we will have a full breadth of surface design artwork to show the public and that as many Washington State SDA members participate as possible. Let’s show the art world the innovation and creativity that is possible!

What is Surface Design

Does your artwork qualify as surface design? The question is still being raised. To me, this definition encapsulates it all, especially the last sentence:

Surface design refers to any process that gives structure, pattern, or color to fiber. Fibers used could include handmade felt, paper, fabric, or basket-making materials. Textile here is defined as any natural or artificial fiber or a non-textile element, such as metal, that takes on the properties of fiber or is used in combination with textiles. To these surface designers dye,paint, print, stitch,and otherwise embellish. More than the methods, surface designers are interested in the unlimited options for enhancing and experimenting with color, texture, and design.

LM Wood is an experimental artist living and working in North Carolina – as well as SDA Website Manager. Originally from Minnesota, she pursued a variety of careers before discovering art in college. She received an MFA in Photography fromUniversity of Cincinnati and an MFA in Fibers from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. Having been educated in a variety of diverse artistic styles and practices, Wood navigates between the domains of art, craft and technology. Her work is a blend of digital technologies and traditional processes, resulting in hybrid works that elevate process and craft to “high art”.

Your Chance to Show (or teach) at Schack!

If you’ve never been to the Schack Art Center in Everett, you need to put it on your “To Do” list.

Today, Barb Matthews, the WA SDA state Rep, and I met the curator at the Schack to discuss our upcoming “Fiber Fusion” traveling exhibition. The Schack will be the final home of our WA state galleries hosting this show. While Barb and I have both visited their gallery for other exhibitions, we were completely blown away with all the exciting spaces and changes going on.

If you’ve been there, you know the space is big. Well, guess what? They’re getting bigger! They’re just completing building out their second story- almost doubling their space. Part of their preparation is due to their upcoming exhibit of internationally known printmaker Chuck Close. His work will be featured in both the lower and upper galleries from May-September 2016.

Not only do they have an amazing gallery space, they also have incredible classrooms- even ones with running water- good for “wet” processes! They will also have specialty classrooms for printmaking, drawing/painting, glass, metal-working, and lapidary (cutting and working with precious stones.) We’ll be posting calls for teachers of different surface design techniques for the time frame of our exhibition there, but if you’re looking to lead classes or teach, you can find out how to submit a proposal for classes on their website here. They’re particularly interested in getting some more printmaking classes for 2016.

3-D Artists will really appreciate all the different sizes and shapes of their pedestals, as you can see here. Interested in making art cloth? They can hang from the ceiling on both levels! And, of course there is plenty of wall space too.

The Schack Art Centers Store offers pieces for sale from area artists

For those SDA members who are ready to sell commercially, the Schack’s store will love to look at your work, particularly to be coordinated with the time of our exhibition.

They also have an incredible marketing and PR person and the exhibition will be seen in all sorts of news media and on radio.

The Washington Surface Design Association (WA SDA) has just published the prospectus to our upcoming traveling exhibition. With four galleries over the course of 10 months, we’re looking for the best examples of surface design from our talented members. For more information go to:
